Everyone talks **** about the GM's ifs but I don't see the issue. Most of us aren't building a sled puller. My 03 2500HD has 100k on it mostly towing either a wheeler with a camper on the back or dragging a LQ gooseneck horse trailer. Countless miles beating down logging roads. It's lifted on 35's and still drives like a dream. It has never had tire wear issues, the ball joints are still tight, and the unit bearings are still alive. The ones in our fleet at work usually make it over 200k before replacement of any front end parts.

We have 5 6.7 F450's a few 6.0s and a few 7.3s left. I've been impressed with the 6.7 so far but the oldest is a '14 with 45k on it so time will tell.

I'm a Chevy guy but 90% of our fleet has been Fords and I'm pretty impressed with the new ones. My boss has a '14 Chev 2500HD that he loves, zero issues in 85k miles but he's looking at switching to his 1st Ford next year. His last truck was a '12 Dodge and he hated it with a passion. Ended up taking it back to Dave Smith and trading it for the Chev.
 
We don't work on as many as Crash does, but I'd never touch the Ford. The 6.7 Cummins trucks are nice and we see lots with tons of miles on them. As stated earlier, short trip driving is what kills ANY modern diesel. Ball joints, front axle shaft joints, and steering components top the list on Dodge issues.

I love the GM's. I'm sure you know about some of my recent issues, my trip to KOH and blowing it up, but my truck was pretty tuned up and it would've been a simple turbo failure had I been paying attention. I still have the '05 and will fix when I get time. The '06 and '07 'classic' Duramax trucks got the better six speed trans. and the best incarnation of the Duramax without all the added emissions components. They do go through upper ball joints and stuff like that, but they all do, and it's worse if lifted or even just leveling kit. My '05 got used HARD for YEARS, still love the truck. The GM's will go 120-150k on brakes without being touched!

My new truck is a 2014 with 100k on it, paid $30k for clean straight truck w/ leather and the goodies. It drives very nice and I'm loving it. I made some minor emissions 'alternations' and a very mild tow tune in it and it's been great so far. I've only put like 3k miles on it so far but no issues. I plan on leaving this one alone other than what I've done and not getting crazy with the tune. The '05 ended up getting head studs, built trans, etc. You're welcome to borrow mine for a trip and drive it a couple days if you want a real world test of the GM.

Does the 07 Classic have a Catalytic Convertor, or, the Diesel Particulate Filter, or both?

And have driven my buddies 06 Classic a few times, and used a 07 'new' style to drive down to Pendleton to tow my Ford home, back in June. Thanks for the offer.
 
If you really need a crewcab, diesel, manual tranny... find a clean OSB F350 and spend the rest of your $$ on a Cummins swap.... or just run the **** out of the early Powerstroke and call it a day.
 
I see a lot of "Stay away from the Ford" comments here with no reasoning? What are you guys seeing so bad out of the 6.7? Especially '13 and up? The only problems I saw with them at the dealer were city/fleet rigs that idled all day and plugged up EGR coolers.
 
I know a few people w/ the newer Fords that LOVE them...

It doesn't matter what you buy... someone is going to tell you something about it is a piece of ****.

I work on a fleet of the "little" 6.7L cummins motors...also work on the mid-duty ISL line... The 6.7L has been fairly reliable, except for warped manifolds, failed valve cover gaskets, causing misfires (due to water intrusion into the external connectors), EGR/DPF/DEF issues all very real... There are several issues with all makes, it's a matter of what you want to spend your money on.
My neighbor just bought a '15 6.7 PSD crewbus to replace his 92 OBS 460 crew bus...I borrowed it to run into town for some lumber (camper was on mine); it is NICE to drive, very quiet, a bit more powerful in stock form than my tuned 97 7.3L, roomy...trans shifts nice. Oh, did I mention QUIET?!!? :haha:
Chevys I cannot say much on, as I haven't worked on em like some, but I have to say, I have experienced the trans issues about going into limp in often (PRNDL Switch is most common...) enough. The injector issues, the head gaskets issues that seem to plague them (even seen it on stock rigs a couple times)... HOWEVER, their suspension/steering isn't really any different than a 2wd van chassis 4500 series... and we burn through upper ball joints, inner tie rods, pitman arms/idler arms like nobody's business...Even have had to replace steering gears for loss of power steering when hot...
I guess I can say quite a bit about Chevs! :SMH::redneck:

2007 is the first year of the DPF tony and 2011 was the first year of Def and we had a **** tons of issues with the 2011's. Anything 12 and up is good.

2006 was the first year for a cat but there are soo few issues with that year and a really good dependable power house.

This is exactly why I sought out a 2006 when I was buying. Took me a long time to find the 06 crew cab short bed SLT I was after, but I finally got one.

I have about 160K on mine and the brakes are still looking good. Then again I'm only the second owner and got it with 80K on it, so I've been driving it pretty much the whole time and know how they have been used.

I do have an occasional squeak from my front end, but I figure it's time to go through it all anyway. Just need to get motivated.

As far as failures go in the past 5 years I've had it, I have needed to put in two glow plugs about two years apart ($30 each), and an alternator and serpentine belt about a month ago (about $300 for new with the one way bearing on it which is better than the stock fixed pulley).

Other than that, it's just been oil changes, fuel filters, and air filters. It's been a great truck that feels like a luxury vehicle inside.

I've talked to a **** load of contractors about the 6. 7 Fords and never heard one complaint. Everyone I've spoke with that has one loves it. They all hate the 6.0/.4's though!
 
ive had great luck with my 09 6.7 cummins. Deleted it and added 2 micron fuel filtration. Its never missed a beat and gets pretty darn good mileage.
 
So here's what I've learned. It's only worth 2 cents... so don't spend it all in one place

The new 6.7 Fords have had problems, especially with the turbo on the early years. Guess the 'newer' ones have a new design. Also found a few other issues

The 6.6 GM engines have had a bunch of different versions, but the 'new' one is 2017 and newer, called L5P, is completely new and totally different than all the previous engines. It shares displacement, but that's more of a coincidence than anything else. It's got an all new turbo, computer, emissions, injectors, EVERYTHING... Very much the same boat Ford was in when I chose my 6.0 Ford, and, I chose..... poorly. Also, this engine is 'hack-proof' or so they claim. In other words, the ECM (engine computer) is unable to be chipped, thereby preventing an emissions changing. (Cannot remove the Cat, the Diesel Particulate Filter, the EGR, or the Diesel Exhaust Fluid without having the Check Engine Light cause the truck into limp mode.

The Dodge 6.7 is pretty well old school, BUT, there is a new transmission as of 2013 called the Aisin, and can handle far more torque than previous models (they claim on par with the Alison), but it's only available on 1 tons, and cost a couple grand extra. The 1 tons are still leaf sprung in the rear, but the 3/4s are coil sprung rear.

And here's another fun fact.... found lots of GM and Ram 2018 model, crew cab, diesel, 4x4, longbeds from the 45000 to 49000 range (after discounts and rebates), provided you're not too hung up on leather seats and sunroofs. (I priced more basic trucks).. But USED trucks from 2007 to 2009 tend to run mid to high 30K range, and 2-3 year old trucks start in the 40k range, and often go upwards of 50k.

From what I can tell, all Dodge / Ram 3500 are leafs, and all 2500s are coils. Both can be had with, or, without additional air bags. Learned this from an on-line brochure, as, the local dealer sales representative didn't know jack, and, they were out of paper brochures.

I'm actually going to go look at a non-dual 3500 today, so we shall see.
 
I just pick up a new 2018 mega cab 3500 SRW with the AISIN tranny. I really like the new tranny over the old one in my 2006 mega cab, night and day difference between the two.

Crew cab here... wanted the long bed for camper hauling, whatnot. I like the fact that I'm not sitting on the side of the road with a broken Ford.
 
311k on a 2011 Ford 6.7 and only issue was driver abuse of brakes while packing 260 Gallons of fuel, a bed full of logging rigging with dip**** riggin rats piloting it.

I have bought another 2017 & will buy two more next month.

Had to step away from everything for awhile, got in some trouble after a guy hit me on my motorcycle.
 
I bought 1 2016 Ram 3500 Crew Cab Long Box single rear wheel not quite 2 years ago paid the extra $$$ for the AISIN trans its got almost 20K on it now been really happy with it 0 issues so far and I just put 3500 miles on it towing 16K pounds too and from and all over phoenix AZ on a wheelin trip.

Probably be selling this truck next year to swap out for either a 4500 or 5500 Ram extra long wheel base crew cab and have an 11' aluminium flatbed put on it so i can load the buggy on the bed when im by myself or hook up my trailer and double haul super easy for any real distance.

When I bought Ford had not come out with the new aluminium body stuff yet and the last gen of ford interior IMO was garbage, was between GM and Ram for me but the ram had more creature comforts based my whole purchase about the in seat driving experience ignored all the power numbers and what not cause they are all so close anymore.

Anyhow there is my .02 cents
