Let's Talk Vibrations... The Bad Kind. I Think I Found My Problem...

Alright, so I had some degree shims attached to my rear spring packs from back when I had a two piece driveline. Well, I replaced said driveline with a one piece, and I wasnt having any problems with it (or so I thought) up until recently. I started getting some vibrations around 40 - 45 MPH in 4th gear, cruising, accelerating, decelerating, whatever.

So, the other day I pulled the shims out thinking it would help since just visually looking at the driveline, you could tell the angles were wrong. My pinion was actually pointing higher than the transfer case, which obviously wasn't good. I pulled them out, and some of the vibrations went away, but I still have some in the same area of speed.

I just went out to check U-Joints and crap when I noticed that my slip yoke has quite a bit of slop. As in, if you lay under the truck and grab the driveline around where the slip yoke is, you can push up on it and lift it up about a 1/8 or so. Maybe less, but its enough to make me go "Hmmm...". As far as I know, thats not normal and the slip yoke should be tight, correct?

Also, I re-geared my diff myself, and I started noticing what seemed to be too much play in the rear end at the pinion rotationally, and I know I need to pull it out and check stuff, but while I was wiggling things up and down, I noticed that the pinion also can do the same trick

So, while laying under the truck, if you grab the pinion and push up, you get more movement than I think any differential should have. The interesting part is that if you put pressure towards the rear of the truck (pushing the pinion into the diff) and wiggle up and down, you hardly get any play. If you push the pinion away from the diff (pushing the pinion out of the housing), you get the play back.

So, Im thinking I need to pull the diff again, check the freaking diff setup because apparently something is going bad (if not destroyed), AND I gotta deal with the slip yoke on the driveline. Am I correct that there should be no "side to side" play? If this is true, Im gonna be kinda mad because that driveline is less than a year old :booo:

I guess Im not really looking for any "help", more or less someone to ***** and complain to because I have to deal with another bad diff. I only re-geared it because the last one died on me, so it kinda sucks that this one is dying now too... But, if you have any input, insight, words of wisdom or encouragement, so on and so fourth, please feel free to chime in.

Here's your problem. There should be no movement ( this is called radial play) at all here. Your pre load is off and possibly a bad bearing.:booo:

Yup, thats what Im guessing/been told on here. Its a solid spacer, so I guess I didnt shim it enough because I just got done double checking the pinion nut, and it hasnt moved and its still damn tight.

On another note, I figured out something ELSE that was causing some problems (the most actually), the front left hub was in the free position, however, it had come apart inside, and was actually engaged. So, it was spinning the axle/front driveshaft which isnt balanced, and was causing a shiat load of vibrations. Pulled the hub off, reassembled and the "truck shakes" pretty much are gone now. However, I still have to deal with the damn rear diff again

You know, I just had an epiphany... When I was setting up the diff, I remember that with the solid spacer it came shims for setting preload, and I remember that when I put shims in, it was WAY too tight, and I either pulled some or all (I think all) of them out. If I pulled all of them out, then that would definitely explain why its so damn lose now  Obviously something wasn't seated well when I was trying to set the preload the first time. Ahh the joys of inexperience and not knowing better. Now I just need to remember where the hell I put the shims...
