Very good point, I prefer Throat Lotion white or Throat Yogurt white. Both are solid choices
Baby Gravey white with some Aunt Flo splatter

Couple pics of how it sits:

Rear Axle is torn dorn, shafts and bearings were good. Brakes look ok except they are just nasty as hell.

Ran Into a Snag with the Diff Cover. Bottom 3 bolts are worn down so much I cannot get ahold of them. Any ideas on a good way to remove the bolts so I can pull the cover. I have tried vice grips and various sockets I have around with no luck. THey are really worn down, not much to even grab onto....

Bottom light is my rear amber

The bolts and a broken stud in my rear axle backing plate have me kinda bummed right now. I have not had luck with either. I have lots I can be doing but those too things are really killing me on putting the rear back together as I planned. I am sure I will run into the same up front. I doubt these covers have ever been off. If anybody has a good bolt extractor tool/idea please let me know.

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

I have welded a nut to a stripped bolt head before.

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Take a small 4" grinding wheel to the sides of the bolts and give the a cut to square them up. Either that or "FLAME ON" and use the hot Wrench. :flipoff1:

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Knowing you only have hand tools and no welder, have you tried using the hammer/chisel technique ?

exactly, without a welder, use a hammer and chisel. after you get them broken loose with the chisel turning it CC, you will have cleats all over it from chisel marks that make great VG tooth holds.

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Did the hood fit or do we need to trim it around the front tubes?

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Hood fit fine, it has a little bow in it but we another set of hands I could get it bent like it needs to be. It should be fine, thinking about making it high clearance for better looks.

I will try the hammer and chisel, I will need new bolts anyways as they are fawked.

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

I use allen head bolts on mine and they seem to work alot better. They get mud in the head but have never bent one up so bad I could not get the allen head in to get it out.

also if you stayed out of the rocks they wouldn't get scraped up. Mud doesn't do that, so keep that in mind from here on out thumb.gif

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Yeah lack of tools is hurting me on this one. I am going to try some heat and hammer/chissel and vice grips. Maybe I will have better luck with that.

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Chisel off the head of the bolt. When you get the cover off ,there'll be about a 1/4 " sticking out that you can get with some vise grips.

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Diff cocer has a recess in it that makes the head sit inside the cover so I cannot do that. That was my first thought but the way the bolts are there is just no way.

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Drill it off. Punch the center and start drillin. I've been meaning to get some reversed cut drill bits, just for this reason.

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

i doent no if you got the tools but you could drill a hole in the bolt and put some threads in it with a left handed tap
then put a small bolt in it and back it out

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

I fawked with it some more tonight and gave up. The two sides bolts are really tight because the ribbing in the diff comes down almost on top of them. My FIL is a machinist by trade, I am going to have him look at it and give some opinions. It pisses me off to no end that stupid **** like this curbs my good progress. I have decided if it keeps draining time I am gonna say f-it and run it how it is. The front diff is in better shape just need a 12 pnt socket for 1/4" drive to be sure. I hate not having the right tools at my disposal and I don't have a lot of patience either, both really hurt in these situations. I have a tap & die set but that **** is just so time consuming to do. P is coming over with the welder this weekend, maybe we can weld to it and get it that way.

use mine all the time....they are only good if the bolt isnt very tight. if it is tight you are fawked

i run allen head bolts on my covers as well much better than a standard head cept sometimes it can cave in and you wont be able to get an allen head bit in it

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Well I got the bolts out tonight! FIL came over and we had to clean up a bunch of beat up metal from around the edges of hte bolts and then hammer and chisel them out. Checked the front diff and they are all good, so this headache is done. Gonna use new allen head bolts when I put it back together. I picked up some small parts and pieces I need today for the spare tire mount and new skins. P is gonna bring the welder over this weekend so we can fab a few small things!

Re: Matt O's S&N Fab Buggy Updates & KOH Prep/Rebuild

Dont use allen heads down there, youll smash then closed then they will be a pain in the ass to get out.
