My Craigslist waist of money

A couple days ago my friend calls me up, and says he would like me to haul some cars for him. I figure O.K., just gotta make some longer trailer ramps, and get a cheap winch.

I hate Harbor freight, so I hit up craigslist, and find this gem..http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/pts/2674162882.html
So, I meet the dude in Auburn at Big Daddy's. The guy promises that it works, but wouldn't let me test it, becouse he says he is afraid I'm gonna fry the winch. ( I had jumper cables, and was going to arc across the motor posts.) I knew I should have walked away, but stupidly, I bought it for $180.

Long story short, after messing with it for a couple days, and putting new solonoids in it, it still doesn't work, unless you arc across the motor, or a solonoid.
I tested the switch for continuity, and it was good.

Now I noticed that it appears there is a small break in the circuit board on this thing.

Anyways, I'm P.O.'d at myself for buying this thing, and am wondering what to do now. Take it in someplace. If so where?

Dude has other things for sale on Craigslist (search his phone #), call him from another number and go meet up with him then demand ur money back or beat his ass. Make sure u meet him at his house instead or somewhere public lol

I like this idea. I didn't know he had other things on there for sale.. Thanks for the advise. I have called a couple times, and he hasn't answered. I just left him a message about 25 minutes ago thanking him for the P.O.S. winch.

First off, the link to CL no longer works, so I'm not sure what you bought. But my WARN winches don't have circuit boards. So...... umm..... what are ya talkin' bout?

All you need with Warn, is a momentary on/off/on toggle switch, some misc wire, and 4 heavy duty solinoids.

So, since I'm already shooting in the dark, with no picture, no description (other than 'this gem') and no link. But these ass-u-me-tions, lead me to believe that the motor works, and the solioids are new, so why not just get a momentary on-off-on switch and rewire it?

I'm still trying to decifer some of the numbers that I found punched into the side of this thing. I did see a sticker that said Warn, and had some info about the model number, but when I went to clean it off it disinigrated.:mad:

The circuit board is in the box between the solonoids, and has some wires soldered to it. I will try to trace them better later today, (right now I'm wiring my garage with a friend.) It appears though, that the wires go to a solonoid, and also to the switch, or motor.

Along with the three terminals on the back of the winch, there are also two small white wires going into the front of the motor through a rubber gromett.

My continuity tester went ***s up last night, so I'll have to get another one and keep trying to figure this thing out. Or just take it someplace.

I also have another Warn box of solonoids that looks like the same one on my Warn 8274. The only difference is that the solonoids are smaller on the 8174, and there is no circuit board, and no little white wires going into the motor on my 8274. But who knows, maybe I could bypass that circuit board, and those two little white wires.

it is possible that the white wires and circuit board are part of a thermal cut-off setup for if/when the motor gets too hot...


chances are, if you just bypass the board and wire it up properly it will possibly work.

since youa re stating that the motor work when shorted it is just a wiring issue with the solenoid pack and that thermal cut safety system..

yeah.... if it was/is a warn, they did have a line that has the thermal protection, which has caused a lot of people to be angry because it does basically what your is doing Ior so i have read)...

but it is bypassable....

That sounds like my next plan of attack. I'll try to do it later today after I'm done working on wiring the shop.

Sounds to me like maybe you should have gone to HF cause then you could take it back if it did not work. As I see it you knew you should have walked away but chose to spend the money. :redneck: Thanks for posting the pics.. I messed with it for a few more minutes, and tried to use an old solonoid box a friend gave me. Still no dice. I'm gonna take a break from it for a few days I think. I'm in finishing mode on the shop as of now.

Maybe I'll just sell it to the guy down the road that owns that car. It would look nice mounted to the front of that thing.

Whoops, I guess if I actually had a waist of money I would get a little thinner every time bought something. Since thats not the case, I suppose it was just a waste.
