Need a permit to widen my driveway?

Just bought my first place, and in the process of doing what I do when I buy just about anything I want to change a bunch of things. Driveway on my side of the ditch is 2 cars wide and just long enough to fit my crew cab pickup, but the culvert and driveway at the street is only 8-9 feet and the culvert is some ugly cobbled together mess with a normal concrete pipe on one side and 2 chunks of PVC on the other so in addition to working like crap as a driveway it looks like crap too. Do I need to involve the City of Auburn in this or can I just get digging?

Yes call the city. In most areas the city/county has a easement 25 'from the center of the road.

You should get any and all utilities to come out and mark their respective locations.
As far as a permit goes it depends on your area, in today’s climate they can be a real pain if you piss them off (again it depends on your area).
I brought in 28 yards of 3/8’s minus for my driveway and never had a problem (been a few years).
But I was not digging, just filling the mud hole were we parked in the front yard.

Beware the greenie's false claims that the ditch is "spawning ground or haven for endangered fish". That and the possibility that upstream or downstream of your spot is a flood zone which will require you building the entire property level up to meet new anti-flood standards and qualify for flood insurance!

Many years ago I worked for an outfit that built houses. When we worked in Auburn we had to submit job descriptions of everyone on the crew when doing subdivisions. At least one of those descriptions had to include "street sweeping. And that person had to see that the streets remained clean daily. Auburn is the only place I have seen this done in this manner. City workers drive around looking for stuff to stick you with.

I'm not planning on digging anything but about half the width of my own driveway out though, take me longer to back fill it than the shovel work to get the pipe in. After looking at Auburn's permit process a little though I might just find some big timbers and lay em over the ditch if I don't want to rock my truck through the ditch.

Truck is pretty well hidden, got 8 foot hedges and a 6 foot fence all the way around the place. Once I rebuild the gate it's going in the back yard anyway since the woman doesn't like looking at it out the living room window. Previous owner wasn't much of a thinker, got 10 feet between the house and the fence, builds a gate that's a little shy of 7 feet...

That might work out in the sticks but will catch up to you quickly in the city.

Yeah, I'm a couple blocks from city hall, they might catch on. I don't think the neighbors particularly give a **** but I'm close enough that someone from the city's gonna see it eventually.

Chat with the neighbors, tell them what you're up to, tell them you're trying to make the place better, then do what you got to do. The city will gladly take your money if you want a permit...
Be smart. Don't divert a bunch of water into someone's yard. You'll be fine
