Just registered after reading some very informative information from the site. I have a major project which I started today on my recently acquired 1984 Toyota 4 Runner. It is rough as hell and I'm in the process of attempting to bring it back to life. I've encountered many challenges so far and need some advice from fellow members. The specs on the 1984 4 Runner SR5 is as follows: Wore out 22r (from unknow vehicle) possibly rebuilt?!? Solid axles were stock until I purchased what I thought were 4.88 gears. I really could not tell a difference in the stock gears and the "4.88's" With 31x10.5 tires, I thought there would be a major difference. Conflicting search results on how to find out what the gear ratio is already installed has me a little baffled. Anyway, after new weber carb, water pump, alternator, radiator, heater core, and other misc electrical/lighting, and interior adds I now have oil in my coolant and vice versa. My question is: Do I rebuild the existing 22r or do I order a rebuilt one. After research, I find conflicting views on all rebuild companies. The Oregon remanufactured engine looked good and priced in my range, then I read negative reviews. However there are more positive than negative. I removed the motor today so now it sits on a stand awaiting my decision. I have a badass mechanic helping me so I'm kinda leaning towards rebuilding what I have considering I know who is doing the work and will be helping. ANY ADVICE IS MUCH APPRECIATED. p.s. I have researched the engine topic and can't make an decision.
