Id take that e3 electrode and throw it in the garbage. Grab you a 2% thoriated and weld anything under the sun. You will find the e3 will dirty up faster than you can grab fill rod. Just my 2 cents. But seat time is 90% of tig welding. That and you will find 3/32 rod is a little much to feed when learning. It will work great for alum. tho since it love the fill. Id pick you up a little bit of 1/16 er70s-2 and 308 rod, thats the best size to learn how to feed the filler with the off hand. When just learning do the feed hand with no glove till you get the motion down then put a glove on will be easier for you.
 
I'm trying to get a TIG welding job at work that pays a good bit more than what I currently make. It's 68-70 degress in our plant year round and it will be welding from a stool. The weld performed will have to be air/water tight, welding stainless water boxes on the end of stator coils for powerplant generators. We are about to begin manufacturing a totally new generator design that will require the welding step. We've never had that before, everything we have ever made has required brazed copper joints only, in which I have done a ****load of back in the day. Now, these new coils will be built similar to our old ones, but have some extra stainless welding done. They have 8 positions open and it will go by seniority, so if I make it, I will likely be #7 or #8, and that's a big "IF".....sure hope I do. More pay and more overtime = a good $15k a year bump for me. That'd be badass! Not many places where you get to TIG weld in the A/C and sit on your ass. Fangers crossed! Everybody who places on the job will have to take a TIG class at the local college that comes with AWS TIG certification upon completion, they estimated 6 months - a year for one to finish the course and be approved by the instructor, then begin work.
 
Be carefull of the sit down welding part. Yes its nice at times but gets extremley atleast for me boring and my back hurts after a while. I prefer not to sit unless im extremly lazy that day or have really tiny parts to build. Stainless is just like carbon just more heat sensitive. The trick to a good welder is practice practice practice. Aws cert. Really isnt anything to be scared of. Its just a skills test and there is always wiggle room for errors. Be carefull of the tig class at a local college really depends on instructor and if they know what they are doing. Look into hobart welding institute. They will travel to your work and train you. They also do a 5 and 9 month program which is 10 minutes in class 8 hours a day welding 5 days a week. Def worth the money for the seat time. Every cert i have for which every job requires i send the test pieces to hobart.

Really? I explained to the fella at airgas that I was just starting out and wanted to practice on steel, stainless and aluminum. He said people really seemed to like the E3. I basically picked everything up based on what he recommended. That's also why I only got small packs of electrodes. That way if I don't like them I won't be out much money. Thanks for the pointers though. I'm sure it's not as easy as it looks but I'm hoping my amateur mig skills will help a little.

This is all arranged through our company, I have no say in who certifies us lol. It won't be sitting down welding all day, there'll be other aspects of the job too. Say we have to do 7 coils per 10 hr shift - We'd be responsible for moving the coils with overhead crane (coils are about 20 feet long), moving them to the prep area, doing whatever to prep them, bolt on some sort of end plate and affix it to the vent tubes, (maybe some more prep work? Still not sure what all is needed) then move the coil again to the weld station, sit down and weld the stainless water box to the stainless end plate that was bolted on in the prep area. All manufacturing work is monotanous at times, but this job will be broken up into a few different functions. Plus it'll be good for me to be able to sit down a lot throughout the night with my leg. I can bust ass on it, but gotta have at least some short intervals of sit down time to let it kinda reset. Job I work now is in Shipping, so for everything I package up or build a crate for, I have to come in the office to run paperwork and type out posts like this one.... :flipoff1:

I don't give two ****s about seeking out a welding job anywhere else but here, it just pays more than what I currently make and shouldn't be too bad of a job to perform. I'd be leaving work every Tuesday and Thursday nights for 4 hours to go to the class, then have to make up 8 hours a week of my time if I wanted to get paid for a full 40 hrs, plus I'm currently in school pursuing a Business degree, so I'd be fawking stretch thin for free time, but it would pay off after the welding class is over.
 
Ya they try n push the e3 electrode because 2% thoriated is getting harder and more expensive to make they are trying to be done with the 2%. People say x electrode is for this y electrode is for this. Ive run 2% thoriated for everything unless weld procedure calls for something different or im doing rare metals. Honestly sit down see what you like. Another trick take your tungsten cut them in 2 piece and sharpen all 4 ends. That way your not up sharpening tungsten every 5 minutes. Or take a small piece of fill and if your sitting around try n feed the fill rod in mid air. If this makes sence when i feed my fingers are like an inchworm. Rod between pointer and middle finger and resting in the joint of the thump. Push forward with pressure on rod with pointer n middle finger till extended. Grasp rod with joint of thumb then move fingers back and proceed. Thumb guides rod and hold slight pressure also. But thats just how i do it.

Gotcha. I just gave the rod feed technique a try. Definitely a lot better feeding with my right than left. Should probably get good with both. I'll be sure to post some pics of my mess tomorrow, good or bad.
 
E3 tungsten sucksssssss. Pure tungsten dosent work that great with inverter machines 2% red rod works for everything I have also had good luck with the grey rod I think is something like 2% lanthanated???? It seams to work well with heat and doesn't pull the contaminated material up the rod

Dont be afraid of the heat, looks like your a little on the cold side for both. Alum loves heat, hot and fast. The fast part will come with time. Take your time get decent size puddle going then slowly moved forward. Its a giant game of manipulation have to read what puddle is doing and what its about to do.Looks good tho for just starting just keep at it you will get it.
 
Spent the evening in Nashville w this little hottie it the full moon pickin party.

Spent yesterday creeping on her at cummins falls. For anyone that hasn't been, these are awesome to swim/relax at. I have the bruised ribs, sore doot, and imobile elbow to prove it from a slip on the moss on the hike back. Lol.

Dang that's at my house.

We used to go all the time before it was a state park. Used to you could park in the side of Cummins mill rd and cross the creek to go down the falls.
 
Had I known anyone lived around there, I'd a tried to meet up w ya. We are at my in laws up in white house for the weekend. Seriously thinking of moving down here.
