I'm not 100% sure what happened and how the injuries occurred, I had on a leather padded jacket, suffered no upper body injuries at all, just broke my legs all the ****. 6 or 7 of us were cruising up interstate headed to Chattanooga, I had just done 2 long wheelies, one of which was standing in the seat while doing the wheelie. We all were in line running around 75, I was leading, 2 guys broke out from the back of the pack and took off, and when that happens, we always played "catch up", so I geared down to 3rd and romped on it while simultaneously leaning a hair to the left to change into the left lane. Next thing I know the bike started tank slapping uncontrollably (where handle bars slap back and forth), I gassed it to try and correct (takes weight off front end and usually trues up), but that didn't work, went across both lanes and the emergency lane, into the guardrail and into the woods, probably somewhere around 90mph. Dont remember much more, vaguely remember being loaded on helicopter, and a few fuzzy memories of the hospital that week, but I wrecked on a Sunday afternoon and it was the following friday when I really came to and realized what had happened. Leg was already gone. Parents had to sign permission for them to amputate, its a wonder my mom didn't have a heart attack during that first week.
All I can figure was when I romped on it in 3rd running 75, the front end got light while I was also leaning a tad to change lanes and when the front tire regained full contact, it went out of control. The main factor - I was running my race tires (sticky soft compound). They were classified as dot race tires and were street legal because they had a few grooves to shed rain, but still not wise to use for regular off track riding. They grip so hard, when it was tank slapping, I knew there was no fixing it, it left black marks with each time the bars would slap one direction. If I was running my regular street tires, probably would have been able to save it and went on about my day, as the tank slap would not have been near as violent. That day was the first ride off-track since the last track day I done 5 months prior in October. I swapped all my fairings out and put the street fairings back on it (with headlights, mirrors, and such) the night before we went riding and didn't figure it would be a big deal to just go on my race tires since I didn't have time to put my street tires back on it (only had one set of wheels).
That's pretty much all I know. If you told me years ago that after all the dumb **** I done on a motorcycle, that one day I was gonna crash out and lose a leg on a straight road, I'd told you that you had lost your mind. Lol. But here we are.
