So I am gettin' a boat...

Nothing fancy... it is a 1977 Bayliner Admiralty 21' on a 1988 galvanized EZ Loader trailer...

Has a Volvo 4cyl inboard

Was last used in 2003

Hull and stuff is faded, but in good shape.

Engine had new exhaust manifold and some other stuff about 3 years ago and hasn't been used since... should run fine w/ a new battery and maybe a tuneup and stuff...

The worst part is the interior... it has been sitting in the sun, and is pretty rough... floor appears to be all solid and not rotted.

I figure I can tear it all out, redo the astroturf myself for around $100-$150 bucks, and put in new seats for around $500 and then figure out what to do with the things like the engine cover and side panels...


The good thing is I have always wanted a boat, and this one is priced right.. :haha:

The bad thing is, I don't know **** about boats, so this will be a learning experience that will either go good or go bad....

I ripped out the interior on my Dad's 22.5' crownline last year to fix some rot.... It gets ugly FAST. I have a long ways to go still... I love boats, but you might as well give up every other hobby if you don't buy newer with no issues.


You couldn't pay me to take a bayliner less then 65 feet though...

rumor has it that this boat is SUPPOSED to have a small block chevy in it, and has an adapter to put the 4cyl Volvo in it... hmmmmmmmm......

I did the same thing. got a 20ft Marlin cuddy cabin with a corvette motor in it. It came with a tandem axle trailer. had to repair some minor stuff and need seats also but I have a hook up on that.

my dad had a 21 ' Bayliner just like that... the 4 cyl volvo is to small of a motor for that size of boat. I bought a 24' Bayliner that put the 21' to shame.. I will make you a screaming deal if you havnt bought the 21' yet..

Boats are fun as long as they belong to someone else, or you live on the water, everyone I know that has ever owned a boat, that didn't live on the water used it a lot the first year, less the second year, even less the 3rd year, then it just sits next to the garage, in till some newb comes to buy it.

As long as you are handy, they don't cost too much for the upkeep. The parts are expensive though. As long as you are not in any hurry, you can usually find decent stuff on the internet that works just fine.

My boat is orange and white, and my interior is aqua and brown. It's ugly but I have yet to hear one fish complain.

Doesn't look too bad for a fixer upper. The thing is to look at the outdrive oil and see if it is clean and tilt the outdrive up and look at the drive gears and see how bad they are worn. That will give you a good indicator of the mechanical condition. The motor and interior are the easy parts.

those Volvo motors are damn expensive if you need parts..IIRC a single piston with rings is 100.00

Something I always did before putting them away for the winter was, running the carb out of gas, make sure you drain the block (if its not fresh water cooled), make sure your manafolds aren't holding any trapped water. Just these few things will save a new boat owner a lil money in the long run

Taking the boat out into the salt water isn't a big deal if you clean it and take care of it. We hand wash out our boat everytime it comes out of the sound, regardless of time of day. We run the motor for a few minutes with the earmuffs on until the water is warm and tastes fresh. We also replace the zinc plates every year.

We are having problems with the motor (tower of power...piece of junk) but other than that its been a great boat.
