Re: New 2011 Backyard Fabrication 2 seater tube chassis. Reduced to $3,350

first off, I am a newby here and have alot of respect for the builders in the south (being from MI) Im not sure but i think cole worx and Jimmy smith were first in the game and the lines of these buggies are to drool drool for and they should get $$$ for what they do Hell i can copy one with a few changes but mine is not for sale and they came up with the concept.!

Re: New 2011 Backyard Fabrication 2 seater tube chassis. Reduced to $3,350

Here is the differnce guys: Jimmy depends on his buggies to sell since that is his full time job. His prices are where he thinks they ought to be. However, Jay does this in his spare time after his full time job ends each day. Therefore, he can sell his for whatever price he wants because it is just extra money and not something he has to depend on. Both guys do incredible work but I don't understand why Jimmy may be acting this way when he has a waiting list a mile long and everyone complains about it. I do not believe Jay is taking away from his business at all. It is a free country and everyone can sell their things at whatever price they want. It is just like seeing a Lowes right beside a Home Depot in the same town. Each one usually has different prices on the same type items. If Jimmy was hurting for business and Jay was calling his customers, then I can see where Jimmy may be acting like this but this is not the case with either of those issues. Also, who cares if the buggies look similar. The Aetna style buggies is what most people like so that style should be built from whomever can build them. I would like to see the majority of people try to build a chassis on their own....most people can't. Can the Dewalt tool company tell Makita tool company not to make the same looking drill? Of course not.

Who cares if the buggies look the same you ask. It appears Jimmy might at this point. Especially since it is his full time job.
Why don't you go ask Bryan Cole how he feels about people copying his work and selling it. I bet Bryan's feelings would be similar to Jimmys.
When it comes to fabrication of anything, whether in the four wheeling world or technology world, people tend to not get "warm and fuzzy" toward people when people copy their design and then sell it for less or the same amount regardless of whether they can tell them to stop or not. Saying Jimmy is not hurting for business or that Jay is not calling his customers is a reason for it to be OK is ridiculous.

Your right Jay has a right to do it. But, Jay or you should not necessarily expect Jimmy to be "ok" with it. However, that is purely upto Jimmy Smith.

Re: New 2011 Backyard Fabrication 2 seater tube chassis. Reduced to $3,350

Hay Jason, did you not tell me about 2 years ago when Jay was building your samurai buggy that i was gonna build you a single seater? yes, you did multiple times. Now, a previous post Jay will build all my buggies!!! WHY, cause hes capable of building the same quality buggies i do,and most of all hes gonna do 1/2 the price. So taking work from me? GO FIGURE My waiting list not that long 5to 6 months. Get on Brians or Woodleys waiting list at least 1 year. Aetna style buggies? Brian stepped out of his box built one for Bobby Tanner looks nothing like mine, but yet is a aetna style buggy!!!!!!!!!!! I love brians style but im not gonna build the same stuff he does and sell them to make money. I like Jay hes plenty capable of building anything. Not trying to be a **** about it just stating facts. But I CAN B A ****, free country. And most of all i want to thank all of my loyal customers for choosing me. Thank you I appreciate the business!!!!! And thanks for backing me.

Re: New 2011 Backyard Fabrication 2 seater tube chassis. Reduced to $3,350

I did tell you that before Jay built my buggy that I have now. His work is awesome just like yours. Jay and I are very good friends outside of this rockcrawling stuff. I am more than a customer of his, I am a very close friend. I just don't see why you get so upset if Jay builds a buggy that looks similar to your style. Do you have Patented Blueprints for every buggy you build? NO! Jay doesn't go by any pics of your chassis or any blueprints. They may look similar to yours but they are not identical. It just happens that he loves that style and so do most people. Out of the years I have been friends with Jay, I have never heard him speak a bad word about you. He looks up to you since you are the Master of fabricating. He is not trying to sell his chassis with intent to cause you problems with your business. It is a hobby of his compared to your sole income. If you go to a country fair and there are two or three booths that sell bird houses, you will see that they are all pretty similar and they each have a different price. This is the same kind of thing with these chassis. I have even heard him talking to people about certain things they want and he has told them they should go see you if he can't do what they want. Therefore, he is referring business to you. It is a free country and anyone can chose to either be a **** about things or be Friendly about things. Isn't that 4 ft. sheet metal brake you use in your shop Jay's? Yes it is. With that said, you can see that he is helping you out by letting you use it. Jay may be a pretty rough guy sometimes, but he will give you the shirt off his back if he sees someone he knows needing something. All these comments would not be happening if you wouldn't have put that snide comment out there. We have not done anything like that to you. You can build a chassis in about a week compared to Jay building one that takes him a month. Therefore, you can sell four chassis to his one so I don't see that he is taking much business from you. Just chill out and stay friendly. Thanks.

Re: New 2011 Backyard Fabrication 2 seater tube chassis. Reduced to $3,350

WOW THIS THREAD IS HEATED DISCUSSION I HAVE BEEN WATCHIN THIS FORUM TO PURCHASE A CHASSIS OR A BUGGY HAVE LOOKED AT ALL THE SMITH STUFF AND EVERYTHING ELSE ON HERE I DO SEE THE SMITH STYLING SUES IN THIS CHASSIS BUT I ALSO SEE STUFF IN THIS ONE AS WELL AS OTHERS ON HERE I WAS LOOKING A GUS'S BUGGY IT HAS THE SAME DOUBLE HOOP BEHIND THE SEATS. IS THAT SOME THING GUS COPIED FROM SMITH OR WAT? AND THE DOUBLE FRAME RAILS LOOKS LIKE EXTRA WEIGHT TO ME BUT MUST SERVE A PURPOSE AS I SEE ALOT OF BUGGYS ON HERE FROM EVERYONE HAS BUILT. GOOD LOOKIN CHASSIS THO STILL LOOKING FOR THAT CHASSIS THAT I JUST CANT RESIST BUYING!

Re: New 2011 Backyard Fabrication 2 seater tube chassis. Reduced to $3,350

You can definetly tell this chassis looks like one of Jimmys, no doubt about it, but as far as style goes, you can see things in every chassis on here that looks like someone elses. Hell the chassis' Jims garage builds are identicle to the Twisted customs chassis, looks like a direct knockoff to me and hes selling them like crazy or at least he was. An example is Cole Shirleys rig. I personally wouldnt try to make a direct copy of someone's design but I would use things I like from a design. Double frame rails have been used by everyone thats build chassis', thats nothing new. Fact is if you can do good fab work and build it, thats talent no matter whos building it.

I guess Jimmy feels like he got a little smack in the face and I dont blame him.

Re: New 2011 Backyard Fabrication 2 seater tube chassis. Reduced to $3,350

YES I HAVE SEEN THE JIMS GARAGE AND TWISTED CHASSIS AS WELL. I SEE WHY SMITH MAY HAVE GOT MAD BUT IS HIS DESIGN ISNT JUST STRAIGHT UP HIS VERY OWN ONE OFF NOONE EVER DONE NONE OF IT LIKE THAT BEFORE I DONT SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. LOOKS TO ME ALL THE BUILDERS TAKE A LITTLE OF WAT THEY LIKE FROM EVERYTHING THATS EVER BEEN BUILT MIXES IT ALL UP AND PUTS THEIR LITTLE SPIN ON IT AND THERE YOU GO YOU HAVE A CHASSIS. ANY OW YES YOU ARE PAYING FOR GOOD FAB WORK FOR THAT MATTER THE CHASSIS COULD BE UGLY AS SIN BUT IF YO GOT YOUR **** TOGETHER WHEN U SET THE SUSPENSION UP THAT UGLY BUGGY WILL HURT SOME FEELINGS! JUST MY OPINION AND AS I WAS READIN DOES IT REALLY SAY THAT SMITH USES THE JAY GUYS SHEETMETAL BRAKE TO DO SHEETMETAL WORK? SOUNDS LIKE TO ME JAY NEED TO REPO HIS BREAK! :dblthumb:

Re: New 2011 Backyard Fabrication 2 seater tube chassis. Reduced to $3,350

Hope you guys are starting to see the picture here. Jimmy is the Master and I would never say differently but Jimmy is the one that taught Jay how to fabricate so he is an awesome builder too. Jay does this as a hobby just to make extra money to build a another badass buggy for him and his wife, not for income to pay bills. This whole thing has turned from the cost of the chassis to now the designs of the chassis. Jimmy, whatever you think, I am not writing this stuff to hurt you at all. You are a great guy and have always been super nice to me and others. I just want Jay to be able to show he does not use pics or blueprints from you, he just likes the Aetna style like most guys out there. I have seen alot of sharp points in your chassis lately and it reminds me of Cole's work but I don't see everyone ganging up on you about it. It is your choice to do whatever you want as long as it looks badass....and it does. Jay will start putting a different spin on things in the future to make everyone happy I guess but it will still be an Aetna style chassis, but he definitely will price them at whatever he wants. As for the brake, you use it as long as you need it. I was just making a point that Jay is not out here trying to hurt you and he looks up to you since he learned from you. Even with all these comments going on, he has not said one bad word about you. I am the writing this stuff and he has no input to give me on it. It should be a compliment to your teaching skills that you taught him so well. Hell, most people don't have a clue how to do this art like you, Jay, Cole, Woodley, etc. But thank goodness there are guys like ya'll that do this since the demand for buggies is going crazy. Stay friendly.

The way I look at it crawlers are all one big family no matter if you have a high dollar rig or a back yard rig we all learn from each other and from time to time depend on each other for help in the woods! Bring what you got hammer on the skinny pedal and hope it is enough to get to the top! God Bless :dblthumb:

Next time swing by Smith Motorsports while no one is there and kick the door down take all the pictures that you can and go back and build the exact same buggy, and if this man has a full time job then why is his price reduced? Looks to me that eather his job pays really well, or he's under cutting the man who " showed him everything " to make money because he's broke. Hell while your by taking more ideas from those cats go ahead and pull the knife out of jimmys back as well. I wouldn't waste the $2.00 it would take to burn that chassis after you do someone that has showed you everything you know that way! :****: :flipgotcha: MAKES ME :puke:
