I honestly think most people who do dont know the signifigance behind it, and simply do it to show how "country" they are when they dont even know what it means or who's it was.

Heres some good reading I found for those who want to know what it is/was. It personally doesn't really "offend" me, but I would sure as hell rather see the stars and stripes.

It's free speech folks, in pretty much its purest form.

I personally reject the idea that it directly symbolises slavery. That would imply that the only thing the south had going for it was slavery.

I think a lot of people fly the thing just because it looks "cool" or to try and identify with their redneck side, or whatever. Either way I dont't have an issue with it.

Also something people don't realize. In the 1800's there was more slaves in Africa than in the Western colonies. Sounds to me we have a lot more flags to tear down... but thats another topic of conversation.

A common misconception. In reality, it is the gratuitous use of the term "hee haw" that gives one such skill. It also allows one to take his car off huge sweet jumps and suffer zero damage. It's actually believed in some circles that "The Flag" was originally designed to pay homage to the power of the "hee haw".

funny seeing all the redneck white trash that fly it in WA state.... it just makes me laugh, WA is a state that was not even in the Union at the time of the war, so surely they have some ties to the south and their "states rights' huh :looser:

bottom line it has became a "status" symbol for trailer trash rednecks :stirpot:

It's the same reason people still like to fly the jolly roger. The origins and modern day meaning behind these symbols are vastly different. Just because I have a jolly roger sticker on my car doesn't mean i rape and pillage others to steal their cd's.

In modern times, I think both these are ideological symbols that represent a healthy spite of the rich and affluent middle class.

I like the jolly roger in particular because I think it embodies a notion that its bearer is non-conformist, and rabidly independent. The pirate legend itself has morphed into an american interpretation of Robin Hood.

the rebel flag connotes a kind of brotherhood that is separatist from the eco-political system that's become the US.

It implies dissent and is meant to insult the beourgoise who cruise into their cookie-cutter suburban homes in the comfort of new SUV's.

Ain't ya'll gentlemen in the wrong part of the USA to be discussing this? As I recall, flying the Stars and Bars is generally popular only in the Southern states.

It is purely a DUKES OF HAZZARD thing for me. Anything that conjurs up memories of daisy duke in her daisy dukes is good enough of a reason for me. Well besides brandishing it on any orange car making it indestructable.

when I was a kid we spent some time in trailers, but not inside of a park. anyways, I always wanted a nice rebel flag for my window like my cousin had. Instead, I just had to use an old torn sheet tacked up with pushpins.

hijack: hey you know the best way to pull weeds out of the front yard when you can't afford any fancy gardening tools? a kitchen fork works miraculously!

So where did all the people come from that are in Washington, Small bang theory?

A lot of the people that live here came from the south, so is it wrong for them to fly the flag of their heritage?

Just a little FYI, Canada has yet to suffer through a war of succession. I figure it will be Quebec against the rest of Canada, with the USA stepping in on the side of Canada at the last minute to do any actual fighting which needs to be done, after which we will forever be seen in the eyes of the Canadians and the rest of the world as murderers. God, I'm proud to be an American....

It does not matter who puts the flag on their rig. Its why they do it. You just have to deal with everyone having a different meaning for it. One of the guys I worked with at the asphalt place had one on his jacked up Yota. Our supervisor (A black dude) said "You do know what that means right". Obviously he didnt either.

Kinda like all dumbs are blonde right? (wait did I just screw my theory with that one? :flipoff: )

I like the quote in the other thread "heritage, not hate".. Assuming that the person flying the rebel flag is racist white trash is about as judgemental as assuming that everyone who drives a 4x4 in the woods is a drunk redneck who tears up the environment. Neither is true, yet for some reason the stereotype stands. Just another example of a few pieces of **** ruining things for everyone else.

If you're feeling particularly musical today, you should check out a song called "The Southern Thing" by the Drive-By Truckers. Good explanation by them, I think.

As a side note: I don't display the rebel flag, because I'm not from the south and neither are any members of my family. I suppose if I was feeling rebellious and under-dog'ish I might fly one... but I have the Jolly Roger for that one. :redneck:

so if you have a sticker/flag like > :rb: it'd mean that you like rainbows or somehting ...casue its all about what it means to you and not what it actually means :haha:
