my 95 zj is making a wierd ticking sound. only when it down shifts or i have to apply more throttle to go up a hill will it start making the sound. it doesnt do it all the time though. no load on engine and reving it wont make the sound. even if i power brake it wont make the sound. any ideas?

loose muffler perhaps?

I had a muffler clamp loosen on my truck and it would make a ticking like rattle in some circumstances (and not always either)

Things known to tick, valve train, piston wrist pin, injectors, bearings, detonation. Check your oil level too.

yes, but is the OP hearing a tick, or a clatter, or a rattle, etc?

Is it a solid tick or a tinny tick? does it sound deep/muffled or out in the open?
Is it a tick or a knock? loud inside, or louder with windows open? From down low to up high?
blah blah blah.

A noise is only as good as the person interpreting it.

try some premium (91-92 octane) fuel, see if it stops.

Description sounds like pinging, but internet sound diagnosis isn't exactly easy.

its a metal sounding tick. with windows down it sounds like its coming from under the vehicle. oil lever is full.
