toyota dash light question

i got a 86 runner. i have found the wire that runs my dash lights. when i supply power to the wire my lights work fine until i turn my running or headlights on? i dont have dash lights unless i supply power to it from another source. what do i need to do to get them running of a separate switch.

Plug in the dimmer switch to the lower left of the steering column.
