Toyota Hydro Assist Weird Problem.

Been having a weird issue with my hydro assist since setting it up. Steering works great turning to the left, but when trying to turn it right....Binds up and doesn't want to steer. It only does this turning right, will turn left all day long.

I did take the lines off and worked the steering on just the box and it worked fine, put the lines and ram back on it worked correctly and turned right just fine for a few days and then started the binding up issue again.

Also rebuilt the pump before I put it on. I assume it also pretty well bled. Just at a loss of what my issue could be

It will turn left easier than right because it is the non-rod side of the ram. Turning right it will have less force on the piston because of the rod.

I get that, but it doesn't want to turn right all. Best way to describe it is basically like trying to turn it right with no power steering with the tire up against a wall. I understand the hydraulic side of it. It turns right easy with the ram unhooked, put the ram back on and it binds up.

It packs up solid, wont do anything. Its weird how it does somtimes.

Could the pump be going into bypass when the extra needed pressure is needed?

Yes, it will almost steer 37" in gravel driveway setting still with ram off

You got a spare pump to swap over or a cheap junkyard pump?

Check to see if the rod on the cylinder is bent. Take it off and you should be able to manually push it in and out. I am guessing it will get real tight when pushing it in.

Sadly do not a spare to try it with. Thought about looking into another new one but thats $$$$

I would hope it's not bent..Was a brand new cylinder out of the box when I put it on, but that is how my luck goes so would not surprise me.

I'd pull the ram apart and check it (if it always works with the ram disconnected).
Sounds like the piston may have come loose (or off) the rod.
When you turn left, it pushes the piston onto the rod and steers, when you turn right is is bypassing through the piston and putting pressure on both sides.

Things we have done, to try and fix the issue but did not work.

-Bled System Multiple Times.

-Pull the hydraulic lines off the ram capped them on the box and the ram, steering worked fine turning 37s with no ram assist in a flat driveway, also drove it down the road a little with no binding up.

- Unbolted the ram from the axle and cycled it a few time, to maybe work some air out of it.

if you capped the fittings on the ram and it was still hooked to the tie rod, and you could drive fine, then the ram is bypassing internally.

If you cap the fittings on the ram it should dead head the ram and lock it up.

When we capped the ram feed off it was at the fittings on the box, and it steered fine both directioms

My thoughts, is it possible to flip the cylinder and reverse your hoses so the cylinder is working in reverse order of its present position? If so and you have the same issue turning left then it is obviously in the assist cylinder but if you still have issues when turning right it is to do with your steering geometry or your gear box.
If your pump were bad I would think it would have the same issues turning left or right.
My thinking it is in your cylinder and you will need to pull it down and see if it has a bent rod or an internal issue.

The pressure to work the ram is directed from the valve in the steering box. I am going to assume you tapped your own box. It is possible when you tapped it that a loose piece of trash got in the line/fitting at the steering box that is blocking fluid flow? When you unhooked everything and worked it manually that one time maybe the trash dislodged and floated around that side of the box until it stuck in the fitting again? Your issue sounds like something is blocking the hydraulics from pushing on the ram, not that the ram itself is locked up. To bind up entirely would require the hydraulics essentially fight from both sides. If you have a spare steering box you could also try swapping that.
