Anyone have an idea as to what would cause a growling noise in 3rd and 5th gear, 5th the most. 1st, 2nd, and 4th are relativily quiet but 5th and 65-70 sounds like the worst kind of metal on metal.

It's a 1991 toyota 4x4 ex-cab with the 22re and W56. Truck has 199k on the trans. Sound only happens at speed, push in clutch and it goes away. Not the normal pilot/throwout bearing noise. Doesn't pop out of gear and shifts smoothly.

I'm going to crack it open and hopefully find gear oil (motor was just rebuilt befor purchase) and not metal shards. Any info would be great, thanks.

I figured as much. I know that 5th uses the same main bearing as the rest, so more then likely 3rd is shot and 5th is making it worse. I'll throw some gear oil/ lucas stabilizer in it and wait till it blows. Then replace it. :)
