So im guna be swapping a 98 4.3 into a 90 ext. cab. I currently have a smoked tranny out of a 89 or so astro that i got from a guy on a big trade deal a while back. I already have a rebuild kit and plan to put a shift kit in it etc. etc. I've been talking around to people and i've been told using this tranny may not be a good idea and that i should go for a 4x4 s10 700 because it has a beefier case. Should i scrap the tranny and start looking for another one or what do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

What are you doing with the truck (I presume it's an excab toy)? DD/weekend warrior, or hard core wheeler???

Haha yeah it's a 90 ext. cab toy, i always assume im talking to toyota drivers. The trucks guna be a wheeler that i want to be able to drive to work a couple times a month. It will do mostly trails, little bit of rocks, and some snow, ill be running 40's on it.

Just some info to throw into the thread. I stold this off of other threads when I was doing research

I heard and read GM inproved the 700R4 trannies in 1985. The "K" on the tranny bellhousing is only one way to check for the 4x4 type tranny. The other way to check is to look at the flange where the flywheel cover bolts on the bottom. A "K" housings flange should be thicker and uses 6 mounting holes for the cover. A regular tranny will not have a thick flange and will only use 4 small screws or bolts for the thin type sheet metal or plastic cover. The 6 bolt cover is a thick 1/4 inch cover. These covers have two mounting holes on the bottom to run strut rods/braces to the motor mounts. On the motor mounts will be two brackets that bolt on them too.

Thanks the info is much appreciated, But im not to concerned with the internals i have a few buddies that know how to build up 700's and i will be going through a rebuild class at school very soon myself. I'm more concerned about the case itself. My friend that's a ex tranny guy swears up and down that i better get a k case 700 cus i'll end up breaking the case. Then my friend that currently has a 4.3 swapped 4runner with a 2wd t-350 says **** it dude your 2wd 700 will be fine, come to find out his bellhousing has a 6 inch long crack in it, not sure of the exact cause.
