So I'm new to wheeling with an automatic. I see there are write ups for torque converter switches, but why would you need one? It seems like this would cause damage to the converter and also cause the vehicle to stall when your stopped? So why would I need one?

I've done that mod to my Jeep and the only time I use it is when I am on the freeway. It helps my MPG to keep it locked while driving on the freeway. You can also use it for steep descents.

Mine does that with just my manual valve body.

The aw4 is controlled by solenoids. There are 2 that control shifting and one that locks the converter. Controlling those solenoids is as close to a manual valvebody as it gets for this series of trans that I'm aware of.
