Which Dodge would you get?

Hardline Crawlers - Rock Bouncer Builds, Tech & Off-Road Trail Talk

Help Support Hardline Crawlers:

hah, I am by no means fat (Bigger then I want to be, but still "Average"), and Dad is skinnier, like what I use to be.. The seats are just hard and flat. I've taken long trips in those seats, and it's doable, they just aren't as comfortable.
We bought the truck for the motor, will live with it right:D. Tho I have no prob with mine, I like the seats in the Duramax.

I still might be talked into a 3rd gen, I thought about just getting a standard cab, because I never use the back seat in the one I have, and just seems like wasted space, and still may go with a standard cab, I loved my old 2000 quad cab so that was kinda what I was basing it on, I just want a standard with a little extra room, if Dodge made an extra cab, then the year wouldn't be an issue, and yes I want a shortbox.

The standard cab's in the third gens have a huge amount of space behind the back seats. Go look at a standard cab you wont believe it.

ZING!!!! Adjustable side bolsters for the days when you feel like rallying to the trails. :awesomework:

Ok, so I've narrowed my search to an '03-'04 Standard cab, or a QC shortbed, I would prefer to get the standard cab, but they are few and far between, but I'll keep looking :D

On a side note, I'll sell mine to any NWW member for $28K which is the same price I will get for trade in :;

2007 C&C, 6.7 CTD, 26K miles, Southbend Clutch and Flywheel, 4x4, Engine brake...etc

Auto's in the 2nd gen trucks are weak. Pick one up cheap enough, and plan on building up the auto a little... or buy a 3rd gen truck ('03+) with better transmissions.

Okay, great info guys.

So what is easier to bomb, 12V vs. 24V

And what's a good fix for the VP44, I'm assuming I could get an upgraded replacement.

I don't want huge power, just what I'm used to, I can take Eli Hill in 5th gear @60mph pulling 14K :D

12 valve is the cheapest and pretty easy. Upgrades for VP44's are spendy. Just a stock replacement is 1100. Most are doing P-pump swaps on their 24 valves nowadays.. If you can find a 98 12 valve quad cab (There is one in Oregon right now, white, for sale. All mods already done, and recently). Then I would go that route. If not, just get a 24 valve and do preventative mods to help the fuel system last as long as it can.

I read into the P-pump and it looks to be pretty much a waste of money till around 500hp iirc. The stock pump actually functions better up to that range.

I just did a vp44 on mine (played too hard on a weaker fuel pump) and it was $965 to my door. Not that hard to replace.

First thing on the 24v is get a fuel pressure gauge and upgrade the fuel pump to a FASS, Airdog, or raptor system. Mine has an airtex system on it and it's not enough for more than power level 3 on my quad.

hey joe, did you have to go through that tranny? it lasted a long time behind that 12v turned up. I am starting to wish my 08 had a damn 12v in it, Ive been to the dealer 9 times in 10months for emissions repairs. Stupid particulate filter, if I had the cash Id delete it.

Yeah deleting the DPF is a violation of federal law just to let you know :awesomework:.

You won't have problems if you just drive on the freeway and let the truck do what its supposed to do. If you sit in traffic then your Fawked and you have to come in and have the turbo or EGR cleaned again...

I wasn't talking hp (for once). The p pump is a lot more reliable. The fact that it makes more power, is cheaper to mod, and quieter. Is just a bonus to it all ..

you really don't much about those systems do you? It has to regen damn near as often even if it's a highway only truck. Perfect example, a friend of mine just bought an 08. 90k miles on the thing, all highway towing miles. He just had his turbo replaced under warranty because it was TOAST. Feeding an engine it's own **** is NOT a good thing to do. Plus the fact that you need to use fuel to burn off the crap in the DPF even while regular highway driving. That truck is going to get everything ripped off this weekend. It will get a lot better mileage, and last much longer.

I'm pretty sure i know how the system operates but you can school me if you'd like... the turbo should have been changed at least once to get the upgraded one, you know with new internals and new clearances that are supposed to stop from gumming up with carbon crap. If that certain truck had not had it replaced then it was needed.

but no matter how much I know or don't know about the system, I do know for a fact it is against federal law to "rip" it off of the truck:awesomework:

Oh yeah dont want to get off topic.
I would get an '07 5.9 quad cab LB 4x4 Auto

The "upgraded" turbo means nothing. It will still die if you keep feeding it crap. simple as that. Why didn't you address the other facts of my post? And my friend knows a little about what he's doing to his truck as well. Diesel emissions is his JOB.

How is 07 different from 06?

And how would your toyota do in a DOT inspection? :corn:

really it means nothing? they changed the metals that make up the sliding ring aka the variable part and the bearing surfaces that gets gummed with burnt oil because someone didn't do oil changes at the proper interval... so I'm pretty sure it means something. The other facts of your post? you weren't wrong a highway truck will probably regen just as much or more because it gets the time to regen, see that is the key time temp and vehicle speed if you shut it down during regen then it doesn't get to do it, if you get off the freeway or go below the speed threshold (im not sure what it is off the top of my head) during regen it doesn't get to regen, if you short trip it and don't let the engine and exhaust warm to proper temp it won't regen.

why 07 over 06? i just like the 5.9 its very dependable and predictable. i like the interior of the 07 better, that fake wood-grain crap of the 06 just looks cheap. I also like the 07 headlights over the 06 ones that yellow reflector strip at the bottom of the headlights just looks horrible to me. Its really just the cosmetic side of the truck that is the difference from 06-07

and how would my Toyota do in dot inspection? Oh it would fail no doubt about that... but that's why it stays at home :booo: for the time being

The truck has to regen once the DPF gets to a certain level. Or else the truck will run in a limp mode. It just flat out can't run with a plugged "muffler". It can regen sitting in park if it needs to with a forced regen.

As far as the turbo, oil changes haven't been an issue for this truck in particular.. But we don't really care to chance it with a new one. And 3 mpg is something he doesn't really want to waste. That's been proven with ditching all of the EGR/DPF stuff.

The interior differences don't mean a whole lot to me.. I think all 3rd gens are crap interior wise, haven't met too many that dispute that.. 2010 they finally stepped up just to keep up with Ford.

ah well.. it's all little personal crap. Jay will be happy with whatever he picks.

your right on all points. The oil thing was a thought of "were redesigning it why not fix everything" that cummins had and they did it now the new turbo is supposed to not have problems. Interior Is personal preference and dodge could have stepped it up. I just wish the 5.9 had an exhaust brake included like the 6.7. The exhaust thing I only said it would be illegal in the first place. If you do the drive cycles or have the ability to do forced regen then the system would have no problems theoreticly.

Does your friend know about the faster warm up using the exhaust brake?

Yeah I hope jay finds what he wants... I think you should make a frummins then you could have all the creature comforts and a good engine

I know many people that do. I've told my Dad about it with his exhaust brake. But I've taken Cummins advice for the last few years and just let the oil pressure come up and drive off, treat it nice till it warms up.

some of the older trucks with the 5 speed, had an issue with the rear output shaft lock nut backing off.

And Fords can't possibly fit into one parking spot. The owner must use two or three.. sometimes four! :redneck:

So looking around dealers are proud of the '03-'04 and asking way over bluebook, I am probably better off just keeping mine and putting a regular bed on it, since I only have 26K on it. I really want something smaller, but will end up loosing too much $ by downsizing.

the front should just have a spacer.. I'm sure you could find a rearend for that thing out of a SRW.. Or just keep the ass end slightly wider for a while, and throw a regular bed on it...

Hadn't thought of the SRW axle, now that's food for thought  Maybe shorten the wheelbase and put on a shortbed :awesomework:

I was thinking just a regular dually bed.

since you already have to buy the bed anyways. It's not all that bad money wise..

So I measured my nieghbors SRW 3500 and the WMS-WMS is the same as the Dana 80 C&C Dually, looks like it will be easier than I thought :awesomework:
