My pointy is there seems to be a parallel here. Silt in streams!....We hear the argument every day how nature causes silt in streams and a little more which we have control over shouldn't matter.....These two topics seem to have the same kind of logic but you seem to be on the other side of the fence. I was hopeing you could explain the logic from your side of the fence and maybe some other people with seemingly double standards could review their own point of view......:corn:
This is a great question.
Everyone has double standards, some just because that's what they were taught, and some for ease to make things in their little corner of the world make sence.
The reason we are faced with so many double standards is because we are running out of a lot of things, open land, freedom, money, power, social cohesiveness, etc. As this happens it's inevitable that some people will find themselves on one side of an issue or another.
All issues are not created equal:
Take land issues you talked about. Is a little more silt going to push the system over the edge? What is the long term impact of the things we do?
Yes nature creates silt and so we add to it. Keep in mind, your and my houses were once in the middle of a vast old growth forest ecosystem. So we've done plenty to ((destroy) - EDIT TRANSFORM) 99% of our land.
Nuclear, and petro-chemical issues are different because of the long term nature of the decisions we make about them. Thousands and thousands of years compaired to decades or hundreds of years.
Yes nature creates radiation, and we add to it.
It's about mitigating causes and effects:
Keeping wheeling to a few sites, and trying to control issues is a good thing. Quality of life should be considered. But nobody wants to be the one that's giving up what they have.
Being nimble enough to recognise nuclear power for all it's good and bad, and being proactive enough to conserve energy or make changes to how we get energy so we don't have reactors every square mile is what we should be striving for in a perfect world.
Selfishness, greed, and irresponsibility these traits have always been active within humans. What's the difference now? There are too many people acting out these traits (numbers of people as in population not percentages of people doing it) so it causes the collapse of the whole thing.
I know I'm all of these things, I want my cake and eat it too. I'm willing to admit my shortcomings.
