Why do we need drones flying over the US?

I took an aerial photo interpretation class in the spring of 1969. The book was published in 1968, so it would have been written about '66 or so. The UNCLASSIFIED pictures from space allowed us to read license plates.

Im a prick and will bring this up.

A month ago a large group of soldiers lost their LIFE on HOME TURF.

It was in my back yard out in Rainier when two choppers crashed into each other and killed 4 servicemen over CIVILIAN land.

I dont really care about the army guys that died. They signed up for the risk/job and it killed them. Thats just part of the jobs risks.

BUT the part I dont like is that the folks of Rainier were put in harms way with no doing of their own.

Unlike those soldiers that CHOSE to get an a dangerous helicopter, the folks of Rainier, Spanaway, Roy, Yelm, McKenna, Eatonville, etc DID NOT chose to be put in harms way because of the military.

The JBLM (army folks) have THOUSANDS of acres to play war on and they continue to fly over civilian land. Why do they continue to put civilian life in danger with rookie training?

IT PISSES ME OFF. :mad:

Remember back in 2006 when a blackhawk chopper crashed south of Seattle?
What if that blackhawk landed in your grandmas living room and killed her? Would you be understanding with the base or would you hold them responsible?


What happens when a drone crashes into a freeway and kills a half dozen motorists? There is no pilot to investigate. Who is responsible? Will the feds blame it on local gov? Will local blame the feds? Will the base make it right?

The base cant even take responsibility for its own half the time, what makes ya think they will care about an runaway drone that KILLS CIVILIANS ON LAND YOU OWN?


The foot needs to be put down.

The military is a political tool, not a freedom machine. :booo:

Actually if a drone crash's I believe they have more available data to see why--they are still man controlled via a control panel (like an arcade game).

Fort lewis has how many thousands of acres to fly over?

Unfortunately there is no choice at times to fly over civil land..

JBLM has over 80,000 acres to train on. If that is not enough they have expanded and also have the Yakima training center which has an even larger footprint of over 300,000 acres at their disposal.



Seems like plenty of land to "train" on without endangering civilians in times of peace.
 
Unfortunately like anything things fail, things crash ect and they don't have to be training. Flying from base to base or rescue missions--it just happens..

I forget the number of lost service folks who were not in combat--but its pretty high.

A couple of years ago an F-18 crashed near here, killed a guys entire family. He just settled for about $18 mil....never once blamed the pilot, in fact even forgave him the following day.
A ****ty situation for all involved, but accidents happen.
 
You might feel differently if you lived in Roy and had to deal with them over YOUR yard EVERY day.



They constantly fly over my place so low they make the trees move like its windy.

Its so loud that my windows rattle form the choppers.

Im not one to ***** about noise or disruptions like this. I live next to the base and expect to hear gunfire, explosions, planes, choppers ect. If you live next to seatac then expect to listen to planes, thats just the way it is.

I accept that and am OK with the noise.

But I dont like them training OVER my head when they have a HUGE playground that we already bought them. (actually we didnt, Fot Lewis is the only base in US history to be on donated land).

Guess we didnt give them enough since they use the space over my head to put me in danger.

I live in Santee (CA) east of MCAS Miramar, I work at UCSD west of MCAS Miramar. I get MH-53, Cobra, F-18s and Ospry flying over at all hours. Doesn't bother me a bit, in fact I often find myself looking up in admoration.

I love looking and watching them.

We used to spend allot of time on whidbey Island and you would hear them do low level flights over us at all hours--thought it was the coolest thing...

I live next to dairies. I dont mind the smell at all. But the farmer doesnt spread his stink ON MY land.

As soon as poop starts flying over the fence we got problems and it aint got **** to do with smell.

The base was here before me. I grew up near it and still live on its outskirts.

I have NO PROBLEM with the noise or training. I just dont like the training over my head.

I have to say... The Ospry is ****ing cool to watch trans from level to hover and back. It's a wonder that I haven't crashed passing Mramar every day.

I do the same thing driving past Mccord(sp) when they are doing touch down/take offs with those big transport jets---damn near went off the road a couple times :haha:

Having a plane fly over ya at HIGH SPEED is a little differently than having them hover in multiple choppers for upto 5 minutes over my property just to slowly hover over all the neighbors at the same slow pace while making their circle every morning.

The odds of a slow moving chopper hovering lowly over you crashing and injuring you are extremely higher than a fast f14 pass over the place.

Out in the desert, the F-18 out of Miramar, North Island, and El Cento do their live bombing runs across the valley....very cool.
Plus the Blue Angles winter home is El Centro, so they are always buzzing around.

One thing I miss about working in Bellevue(only thing) was watching the blue angles do there practice runs for Seafair....

When I 1st moved to San Diego(1982), I worked right next to what was then NAS Miramar , aka: Fighter Town USA, the F-14S would do their carrier pass banking hard left while extending thier wings right over our shop.....lunch times were fun.

Only those who won against the trainers were allowed to do that pass, the loosers had to do a straight in landing.
