Tearing down my D44 to regear from 4:56 to 5:13. Currently have a lock right locker on hand. run it or buy a detroit?

I have a detroit for the rear and ran F/R Detroits in my CJ but never ran a lock right (lunch box locker). would rather spend more money now while the axle is on stands as opposed to dealing with a break on the trail.

will be running a 4.0, 231/300 doubler, 5sp, 5:13s, on 37"s

I'm not sure how heavy your jeep is but I consider 35's the limit for drop in lockers. Most have a 33in limit in the warranty. Ive got an Aussie locker on order for the 8.8 in my Bronco but I'm not planning on going bigger than a 33 in the near future.

I run lockrights front(D44) and rear (Nissan h233b) and have not had any issues with them for the last few years, and I have ran 33s, 35" boggers (IE HEAVY!) and now I am onto 36" Iroks.

Yes they are noisy (lots of loud bangs that sound like axleshafts breaking), yes they do wierd stuff sometimes, and yes they are cheap. I think they are a great low budget option locker.

How will they hold up to bigger tires? It's hard to say, I have no illusion that they are the strongest thing out there, but I also have stock axles in my front end, so I know I need to be careful.

I have a pile of broekn ones under the bench. They are junk.

I rate them like stock axles. If you wheel like a ***** and babysit stock spicer d44 shafts then it might last a few trips.

BUT

If you wheel like a man and have found that the d44 dont hold up for you with stock shafts and you have chromos, then get a detroit.

The rigs with chromos tend to waste the locwrongs even faster. A garbage spicer shaft can only store about 1/4 turn or less of energy. The harder Chromo shafts tend to wind up, some as much as a half turn and then when the pukebox locker finally opens up it has massive energy to cope with and then the teeth say, "goodbye".

Stock shafts and 33, locwrong IF you must,

Chromos and real tires, GET a Detroit.

People who buy Asssie lockers want to belive its "not a locwrong", but it is. Same shitty design, same shitty performance.

But for some reason the word "Aussie" makes them feel better?? Shits better, right mate?? :wtf:

Stop kiddin yourself, you hate those piles and would trade them in an instant for a pair of detroits. :fawkdancesmiley:

Full case locker will ALWAYS better. FYI, the new Grizzly from Yukon is every bit as good as a Detroit, with the individual parts available locally and an unbeatable warranty. I've had one in my rig for a couple years now and it's great.

I bought both of them for the cost of 1 Detroit.:fawkdancesmiley:

If I were to do it again though, I'd probably weld the rear and Detroit/Yukon in the front.:awesomework:

I have front and rear Dana 44's both have full on Detroit No-Spins. Axles have 5.38's and other than changing fluids and front axle u-joints I have never had to touch the Detroits. However I do have 33's, but then again the axles were built in the early 90's.

waiting on quotes for Detroit and Grizzly

If its already apart then buy a Detroit or arb and be done with it. lunchbox lockers are fine for putting in when the axles together but still not a great locker in the long run.

Best part of a lunchbox locker is it will probably go before a shaft, even stock. So if you get 2 years or 10-20 trips out of it then it was worth it. Then WHEN it does go it should be time for some bigger shafts and a full locker. :awesomework:

and when it goes it will probably be in the middle of nowhere and you then become "that guy" :booo: and cursing yourself for not fixing it right when you were already there :eeek:

Actually, it's cuz it was about $80 less than a lockrite. At some point I'll switch to a 9in and a "real" locker but this will do for now. They're not ideal but they server their purpose. Some peoples rigs and/or driving styles are more hardcore than others.

Cancel that order and get a spool. Even cheaper.

No need for a locker in the rear. Its going to be junk even faster if you street drive it and it has to open (POP) and close every day of its life.

Im not talking **** or being a ****, they just plain suck, (bang) and go to junk fast.

You rig is the worst of all, heavy and short. The smalllest of curves and turns in a SWB rig like a bronco make the tires change speeds more more often and more extreme than a light long rig.

If you cant afford to do it right the first time, then why does it seem like its cheaoer to do it over and over?

No offense taken. The street manners don't other me, I ran one in a scout for years with no issues and I wheeled Evans a lot back then. It's more a money issue right now and I don't like the street manners of a spool, been there already. I think my scout was actually heavier than my Bronco, those things are pigs.
