What do you think of having armed and trained teachers/guards in your children's classrooms?

http://news.yahoo.com/ark-district-arming-more-20-teachers-staff-070909074.html

I remember always having a local police officer roaming the halls at lunch and at different times of the day. I went to a smaller high school and it was just a normal thing to see a police officer doing this. And inevitably he or she would be there to quickly respond to a fist fight or an argument or anything else that arose.

This is exactly what needs to happen. I'm all for it. They are putting the personnel who will be licensed through training programs and I 100% support it.:awesomework:

I went to Renton High School and we had a Renton PD officer on the grounds but he wasn't ALWAYS there, and often times was more interested in busting the pot heads in the parking lot then being INSIDE the school. So I see this as a good thing. this will put armed and trained people in the school where they can respond in seconds rather then minutes.

"The plan we've been given in the past is 'Well, lock your doors, turn off your lights and hope for the best,'" Superintendent David Hopkins said. But as deadly incidents continued to happen in schools, he explained, the district decided, "That's not a plan."

I think this says it best right here. I remember doing intruder drills in class, and this was exactly what we did. There were multiple times the school went into lockdown for threats or when the bank across the road was robbed. And sitting there under the desk, you just felt like a total sitting duck.

Most of the shootings are by students, and students of the schools know that this is what happens so locking the door and turning the lights off is not going to keep a gunman from coming in and plucking you off.

I also think it will be important for them NOT to tell students which teachers are packing. Otherwise the gunman will just plan accordingly.

All for it. Sultan has a full time Sheriff that goes between all 3 schools in town (3 block radius) so we know there is quick response in case something happens...

I was a teacher and I would rather be able to defend my kids and myself than be sitting in a dark classroom waiting to die. A gun free zone is a madman's wonderland.

There are many aspects to introducing protective firearms into the schools. First of all, I don't think it should be mandatory but offered to whoever would like to carry. I, for one, don't want someone carrying a weapon if they are not 100% comfortable with that weapon. Second, I think they should be concealed. Third, and obvious, intense training for those who make the choice to carry. This presents a new problem of funding for that training.

There are so many more issues that arise from this topic. I for one am for it. I know that many are not.

Yep, this is what I experienced during my time in Sultania Schools. :awesomework:

An armed society is a polite society. Ever notice how ALL of these shootings happen in "gun-free" zones. the people that commit the crimes are cowards.

Remember kids: Concealed is concealed.

the only down fall of this is the teachers could leave a gun out an a kid get them or the kids trying to steal them from the teachers. just my 2cent

I remember back in high school, people brought guns to school. Especially during deer season. Our principal actually had us bring our rifles in and lock them in our locker rather than leave them in the gun rack in the truck. We NEVER had any issues.

absolutely!!!!! :awesomework:

and so many posts above right on the mark except for the one about the teacher leaving a gun out......

Yup, my dad used to bring his shotgun to school daily during duck hunting season. Times are different and I don't feel the discipline and respect for firearms is as prominent as it used to be. There is an unwarranted fear towards a tool that has been used for centuries to keep families fed and wolves at bay. And instead of blaming the user for the misuse of the tool. We blame the tool. It was the skil saw's fault for cutting my finger off. You can't prevent all situations or accidents from happening, but you can lower the risk and chance of them by educating and practicing safe operation of those tools. We took tests in shop class before we were allowed to operate a drill press and operate in safely within our own abilities.

I'm for it if the teacher chooses to be armed and trained.

In no way do I think it should be mandated. I'd rather have a responsible, armed and trained teacher protecting my kids than waiting for the cops to show up when the SHTF.

This is the only concern I would have, I dont know how much of a risk it would be if none of the students knew what teachers were carrying and the kept it properly concealed.

Key word here is TRAINED......

Training doesn't mean anything. When I was in the Marine Corps we saw this on several occasions. When **** hits the fan some people even if they are trained are not wired for the confrontation or their reaction at least the first time anything happened. We had people mentally lock up because they couldn't handle the situation. Those people are just as dangerous as the shooter if they can not think through the situation they could kill anyone out of fear to protect themselves doesn't matter who it is. The training teaches you how to fire and maintain a weapon, you can do a thousand dry runs but it will never be the same as the real deal.

I'm all for having armed guards at schools and other gun free zones, but when it comes weapons in schools I would prefer someone with prior experience that is going to be able to think through a situation.

I support armed guards in schools I just think we need to think about how it will be implemented better because 53 hours of training is a joke.

A couple years ago a kid here on the island was suspended for a YEAR because he had gone hunting before school and had his shotgun in rack on his truck. Unloaded. That's what zero tolerance gets you. Complete ****ing bull****. when I was a boy if ten I used to wander a couple miles from our house up the highway to go shooting on our property with my Ruger 10-22, think a kid could do that now? It's too bad society has come to a place where we talk about arming teachers and punishing kids for knowing how to handle a firearm.

So training means nothing to the use of a fire arm? I would think being your an ex marine you would value the training of somebody with the proper use of a fire arm.

I do value the training of the use of a fire arm. That's why I say 53 hours of training like the teachers in that artical are getting is a joke. Using a firearm on a range is completely different then a real life scenario.

Situation has to dictate mental stability needs to be considered. Fight or flight is not overcome by going to the range. Armed flighters are just as dangerous to the children as a gunman. There is a whole mental side that is being ignored here and you have to recognize that. When I was in, the marines who were new were watched very closely because of this. People who mental lockup are not the same as they normally would be. Think panic attack.

Once again I agree with armed guard that are capable should a situation arrise. Arming a staff that has no experience and telling them to protect children I don't agree with. Some on that staff maybe fine but others may not and it is not obvious who may crack under that type of pressure.

Nobody can determine how somebody will react in a hostel situation.

I would rather have somebody trained than not in that situation.

Heck there are many many many folks who carry a gun on our streets every day who really are not correctly trained in the use of a fire arm.

im all for it.
id also love to see it become part of the WATCH DOGS program, and have that program spread to more schools. i volunteer in that program at the kids school.

I do agree with you about the normal armed citizens and I do think they are a huge danger but that's their right and our right to protect ourselves from each other. I do agree that there should be firearms in schools, I just don't agree that educators should be the ones to possess them around children.

You are right that there is no way to know how someone will react and that is why I make the point of armed guards with experience. Children do not have the right to protect themselves against someone with a weapon that's basically what law says since they can not possess a weapon. They need to be protected I'm just saying lets do it in a way that does not have the possibility of adding to the danger they may face.

I agree with training, and experienced armed guards, but also think that there should be gun safety and education classes for the students so that they learn proper respect for weapons, not blind fear... And I think that it should b4 a mandatory class before high school, no matter what choose of action they take, as long as we live, there will always be someone that will abuse the freedoms and rights that we have for their own benefits or sick pleasure.

As for kids stealing the weapons, if they do a "adult crime"then they should be treated as an adult all the way

I agree as well about having teachers carry guns. But only if they want too. they should also, do training once a quarter for guns. one time training isn't enough, it needs to be continuously taught. I'm not saying they need to train like a police officer or federal agent, but gun safety and weapons familiarization are huge aids.

yes, people that lock up in dangerous situations are dangerous, but training them certainly helps. we aren't taking about a person to go out and take point and look for the shooter, we are talking about a teacher protecting their students and themselves. in a sense, combat isn't much of a different scenario, but we are talking about some psycho going classroom to classroom shooting kids and adults. open the wrong door and pop he/she is dead.

Even lead flying at a shooter is often times enough to discourage the person. Despite the fact they were not hit. Flying lead had that effect on people....

:eeek: back drop, stray rounds? How about well placed rounds, even strays can go through walls.

hell, even if all they had was blanks, the sound of some one returning fire will make most atleast hesitate..

Most of you guys don't get it... If the bad guys know there are others with guns ready to return fire they will be much less likely to bring it on in the first place! This same thing applies everywhere not just schools.

this is true to a point. any normal person with common sense wouldn't do something if they were going to get shot back at. but the people that do this aren't working on a full set of gears. they've got some cogs missing to begin with.
