I'm going to a 3 year shore duty in Everett starting in December.

My shore duty in 2007 I either Wheeled or did something Wheeling related (Rallys, winter convention, etc). Every weekend.

Talk to Kim Gunter, she will tell you this is the truth.

I know allot of sledders who are younger but most belong to an organization of some kind.

The majority are older folks. There are younger too, but they tend to be more "adult like" than others.


Ive never seen a drunk kid from south hill rid his old beat up half broken sled to Elbe. EVER.


I do however see your wheeling bros driving smashed up 4x4s full of beer cans ALL THE TIME passing by on the ay to Elbe.

So do we just sit back and let that be the stereo type, or do we make an effort to change it? Wheeling can be done cheap, but tends to not be a cheap hobby.

I also know many people under the age of 30 who are into sledding. its not just older folks. The fact that they are seen as "acting older" tells me they are doing something right and maybe those in the wheeling community could take a lesson from then and act better when in the public eye.

WOHVA . We are already doing this. We need more 4wheelers to join the pnw4wda and make our voice heard. Until we have the membership to compete we will always be behind.

Forgot all about WOHVA.

I still feel like more can be done and needs to be done in the form of PR for the wheeling community.

Can't fit a 30 case worth of beer cans on the back of a sled :fawkdancesmiley:. Better to have it in the back of the truck then on the trail so long as it is from the night before and your not driving smashed. And who cares if someones truck is smashed up, that's what happens in this sport, right?

Image and perception are everything. It use to be that the only beat up rigs were fokes that lived in the ..... and in small numbers ( out of the public eye ). Now with the invention of youtube and the web. Multi media and people that think it is there god given right to rip **** up and go where ever they feel like.

It was fun while it lasted.

I haven't been up towards Isabel in a few months but the other trails have almost all been logged and what has not been logged will be getting logged with-in the next 5 years...

I have walked just about every trail but its been a couple years. There is less growth than you would expect..... More than anything old tress and crap that have fallen onto the trails themselfs...

So they closed the trails down and said we are ****ing them up, then they turnaround 5 years later and log them all? Do I have that right?

Much of the land DNR manages are tree farms. The money from the trees is given to different public schools. They don't like 4x4s rubbing bark or driving over roots. Silt from trails going into fish bearing streams is a concern for them as well.

Elbe and Tahuya are also tree farms. The 4x4 trails are used for skidded roads at harvest time.

Actually it had very little to do with tree damage (although that was one of many factors) it was more to do with all the stream crossings and the massive amount of money it would have taken to build bridges across all of them... Also a big part of old Reiter was on private property... so there are many many issues that lead to Reiter closing but it was a shock to the DNR people on the ground supporting Reiter at the time it closed we were working closely with DNR to mitigate a lot of the concerns/issues and when DNR Olympia told them to close it they did...

The current logging in part is actually to remove the old usage and reset the land. The DNR forester (John) has been working closely with the rec manager (Ben) to preserve and protect the trails as much as possible and trying to locate the leave trees in agreeable areas to hopefully still make the trails enjoyable... we did what we could in the 4x4 area but the new trees will be 10 feet tall before we know it!

This is the most important outcome of all of this. Two different department managers, who don't really have to give a rip about the other, discussing what is best for the "whole" situation. This is how things used to get done in "the old days".
