Well it just seems to be this rig. I fix one thing and something else goes wrong. I had a growling noise that at first I thought was coming from my t-case. But I got some o-rings & seal replaved it he t-case & couldn't find anything wrong. Well I was driving the Jeep yesterday and the Monday. The growling sound now could be heard coming from the rear axle. Okay this could be bad!!!! So today I go out and pop the diff cover off my Tera CRD60 axle and guess what?? I ahve two broken teeth on the ring gear & the pinion looks bad too. Something was loose inside or came loose while drivng it. There are some nice dents in the ARB. So Mike if I bring you the axle striped, no axle shafts, the Nth Degree brackets removed how much for new gears, & all new bearings?

Thanks.

Also can I run this thing the way it is or is it going to cause issues? Can I drive it until I can afford to get it fixed?

The problem is that something happening to FUBAR your R&P in the 1st place and until you find out what happened & fix it it will probably keep getting worse, which may cause it to just take a big old dump on you and leave ya stranded.

Are all the bolts holding the Ring gear to the carrier installed and tight?

my 2 cents...

Did you find all the broken pieces if not alot of times they wil go up into the oil passage and sit between the pinion bearings. If there are big enough they could just sit up in ther but the smaller ones can work down into your pinion bearings and cause more dammage.

Something came loose and popped the ring gear tooth off--no way a tooth just broke off....

Nice work Rick. Like Crash/Jobless have said there is a reason this happened and it needs to be addressed so it doesnt happen again. And to think I am not hardcore enough as I have never broke a ring and pinion yet. Not even my current 7.17s, with my leadfoot. Get new parts and Crashmaster will get you fixed up.

Yep and everyone said it was the D44 that was going to give up first. :redneck: I think it happened when I was in Moab but the loose pinion I am fairly sure is what did it. It just sucks right now. I needed to spend money on other things.

with a dana 60---the pinion coming loose will not cause the ring gear to do that..

Due to the tight tollerance between the ring gear and the housing something bound up between the housing and the ring gear--once the carrier is pulled you will see a mark on the inside of the housing on the ring gear side...

Ok,
So Mike what should I do at this point? Just pull the axle and bring it to you or someone else? I got to figure out where this money is coming from first.

That would be my best advise rick..

Any good gear guys on your side of the hill?

Well just a quick update. I pulled the rear axle and took it over to our club president for him to R&R the gears. When I got it over to Mike we started really looking at the gears and there were at least 5-10 more teeth with cracks in them. So Yukon gears are on the way. Should have it back up and running by the end of the month.

Okay figured there wasn't any reason to start a new thread about this. I got the R&P replaced and the axle back in my Jeep in July. Been on a few runs with no issues. Was up at Rimrock this weekend playing and got a little hard on the skinny pedal. Well I now have the same growling noise I had before. I was bouncing the Jeep pretty good at one point. I plan on getting it off the trailer tomorrow and maybe pull the cover tomorrow or Thursday. Will post the damage pictures when I do. Anyone know of issues with the Tera CRD60 housings?

just curious what brand were the original gears that broke? im not a big fan of yukon anything.

also during the setup did you use a crush sleeve or a spacer and shims on the pinon?

did you break-in both gear sets the same?
I bought the axle used so I can't say how the first set were broken in.

I doubt there was any break-in.
Yep on the second set there was, I drove abck and forth to Ellensburg & Cle Elum breakin them in.

Hip,
The frist set were Percision Gear and the second were Yukon. As for as the setup I don't know I wasn't there.

Now for a quick update, I pulled the diff cover and Yep I Broke some teeth. I found 5 cracked and one chipped so far but didn't turn the carrier yet.
I will take some photos when I get back from town and post'um up.

you got big problems, thats just unheard of, I pounded on 7.17 for 2 yrs with no problems. then changed them to 6.17 for 2 yrs and finally broke the teeth off them airin out with high wheel speed. this is in a low budget 60 front.
