11K deckover build

So I decided it was time for a larger trailer. I was tired of bumming a tow or borowing a trailer to haul the stomper. I have a smaller car trailer but I seem to overload/abuse it alot. The solution was to build a 11K deckover dovetail tandam axle beauty! I would like it to be around 3000 pounds when done, that should be 8K in load capicity. The stomper weighs in at a little under 7500K.

I got a pair of 5500K electric brake axles from a friend. He had gotten them to build a trailer, but just bought a new trailer instead. I ended up trading him out of them.

All the steel was salvage. I set up a diff for a guy for the channel, I beam, and angle iron. The box tube for crossmembers was bought from a guy that scraps shipping containers for 10 bucks each ($150total). The box tube crossmembers are "Load stops" from inside containers, 2"x4"x7'6".

My room mate works at FREEWAY TRAILERS and got me a killer deal on a bulldog adjustable 14K coupler. He also scored me a used 2x2 bulldog tongue jack.

I used 16 twenty foot 2x6s for the decking ($120). I have got to get the dovetail done still. Then wire the lights and breakaway.:awesomework:

I hope this explains some of the hold up on the buggy!:redneck:

I need to finnish the tail and paint it. Then USE it!!:cheer:
 
Looks good Brad....Only thing I see is maybe you should have run the tongue beams further back on the frame sides to help spread the tongueload...But otherwise should work well for ya!!!:awesomework:

Right there with ya Kev!:awesomework: I already have them cut but was running out of dry time outside.

I was amazed last week when I went looking for trailers at the lots. None of the 10Ks had full tongues, only the 14ks and dumps had runners all the way back to the axles.

The nicer 10Ks I looked at had 6 inch channel frame/tongue config.

I went with 6"channel for the frame and 8" Ibeam for the tongue. I want to be able to load heavy in the front if need be.

I will have the dovetail be 3 feet long, making a total deck of 23 feet. The dove will be all diamond plate for ease of dragging junk on with out trashing the first three feet of deck boards.:awesomework:
 
The other thing you could do would be to run some C-channel about 4ft down the framerails, weld them to the tongue rail ends, then fishplate them together...would do the trick...:awesomework:

My 7K has 5" boxed tongue frame all the way to the axles...:eeek::D
Sweet, 23' long??? Now I know someone who's got a trailer I can haul 2 Sami's on!!!:fawkdancesmiley:
 
This was the low end of what I looked at. Angle iron tongue?:puke: See where its bending (paint is flaking off and rusty).:rolleyes: It also stopped short of the axle mounts.

It had 2, yes 2 inch channel crossmembers.:eeek:

This is whats being made by MFGers for a 10K.:haha::haha::haha:

Close! I cut two peices of 3x5x 3/8ths angle for the connectors between the tongue and axle mounts.:D
 
That first pic looks like it's c channel tongue, and the rust appears to be from battery acid over time (notE the full size battery right above the rust!):redneck:
 
Heres a few of one of the nicer ones I looked at. I still feel its really underbuilt. You can see the tongue only comes back to the first crossmember (18"). No ramp provisions. Flimsy end/corners in rear.

I did not like what was out there. Most deckovers are built with ramps as an afterthought. I asked why none have ramps, they said no one buys them for vehicles. WTF? Then he told me most deckovers were loaded and unloaded by forklifts and that my needs were rare in a deckover sale.:mad:

It was angle, trust me. It was 3x5x 3/8ths.:eeek:

It was bent, the rust was probaly caused by batt acid.

Heres a pic that if you look closely you can see the curve between the deck and rust stain.

It was so noticable I had the olelady get down and sight it. She pointed it right out without me mentioning what to look at! And shes far from mechanical!!
