It's a closed knuckle 19 spline.

I've got a buddy who's trying to ID his D44 in the front of his Willys. No it's obviously not stock.... It says 44-1 on the housing and recently this evening we found the magic what looks to be a Dana ID# stamped on the driver's side(long) tube.

I've contacted a ton of resources with zero luck, including Olympic, George the Jeep, 4wheelingplus etc etc. The problem at hand is it was purchased with a broken and removed driver's side shaft. We're looking for replacements, but we can't even figure out what the hell it was in.

Any help besides BS that states it's a weak POS or he should swap it out (will eventually) would be great. Thanks!:hi:

Post some more specs. 5-lug? What is the overall width wms to wms? What is the spring spacing? What spline inners? What spline outers? IH, Dodge, and Jeep all had 5-lug closed knuckle 44 fronts.

Do you still have the broken shaft? If so measure it, and you can give vendors some measurments, if not you can get one that's long, and get it cut to lenght and resplined

... it's 5 lug... 19 spline inner and 10 spline to the hub.... not clear on wms-wms and spring spacing.... as far as spring spacing goes I assume you're looking for the space between the inner-most point on one spring to the other inner most side????..... This whole closed knuckle 19 spline business has me climbin walls... :haha:

FYI- We already pulled the existing passenger shaft(short) and measured it. It's at George the Jeep's currently and nothing has been matching up. (drivers side shaft was MIA when purchased, I mean how hard could a D44 shaft be to find....:mad::mad: ).

Thanks

19-spline inner for a closed knuckle is damn hard to find. The numbers you gave won't cross to a BOM, you're still missing a 602XXX-X type number. If you can dig that number up, I can cross through Dana tech, but if you had that George probably would have fixed you up. I mean, you can't even really have one made at Dutchman, as even their blanks use a 760X series u-joint and that won't fit through a closed knuckle housing. Time to measure and look for a Waggy, I know you didn't want to hear that.

spring spacing would be center to center of the spring pads. wms-wms is the over all width at the wheel mounting surfaces. A more relevant measurement might be the housing width from kingpin to kingpin though.

I have an IH closed knuckle 44 I'd sell if it is what you need. Mine is 8-lug, but if yours is an IH axle the shafts should be the same.

:mad:Thanx guys.... I'm gonna keep lookinh for a BOM #.... Hell I was suprised we came across the other one that's stamped on the tube. Why the hell do they stamp worthless numbers on axles:haha:

I have a closed knuckle 44 from a J truck, they are around. I have no idea about shafts, splines, inner or outers. That's where I would look for a donor shaft.

I really doubt any of them were made at the right width for an MB/GPW. What your buddy has is probably custom and narrowed. Find one like mine, and have it shortened, probably the best bet. Of course, that won't be too bad, $100 or so (according to Dutchman's price list), but getting an open knuckle axle under there won't run too much more.

Looking at the photos more, that is pretty wide, what are the dimensions, kingpin to kingpin?

I think I heard somewhere that a j10 (jeep truck) D44 had an odd sized length on the long side.

My non-expert opinion is that this axle is NOT custom... all the welds appear original. However some custom changes were definately made to the steering knuckles.

Got some new info.....

- The short side (passenger) is 17 1/8th " from the end of the inner splines to the center of the u-joint.

- The short side axle shaft is appoximately 1/2" longer than a Foward Control Jeep.

:corn:

I had the same problem - finally came up with a set that looked like this after some gentle cleaning: 9 23 6B3 603817 2 - is there a date or other code scratched on the gears (though I doubt they are stock)?

My ultimate solution was http://www.riversidegear.com/ Call them up with what you have and let Bob help you out. He still has all the dusty catalogs and stuff you'll need to figure out what it came from and he can get you parts and the other random crap you may want to have in order to make it work again.

Bob is a good guy and loves to find stuff for older iron, enjoy!

P.S. - The last time I saw closed knuckle stuff was on an older Wagoneer - but it was not a 44...

why waste time on a 44, just upgrade to a 60!

A 60 on 33's on a SWB Willys huntin rig? He's just tryin to get into the woods for Memorial. Only pussies run 60's anyways... real men run 70's:flipoff:

Thanks bharris68... I'll give 'em a ring.:awesomework:
