does anyone have a 1.5-1 5/8od pipe die for a bender i have alot of tube to do and pipe is way cheaper for the cosmetic and non structural parts of the cage. i live in sultan, and i can leave a deposite or whatever as far it being on loan.

I have all the dies for the typical harbor freigt pipe kinker Morgan.

no im looking for the pipe die that fits a real bender like jmr or similar. i wouldnt dare put any tube on my truck with one of those harbor crap benders/kinkers hahaha i wouldnt make lawn art with one of those:haha:

Here is a kinker cage a built over 5 years ago and it gets wheeled about twice a month and beat very hard. It gets rolled regularly. Anyone who has wheeled with Rod will tell ya he is hard on things.

NO kinks. all pipe. never failed. Its all in how you manipulate the "kinker" and place pipes for strength. Not lawn art either.

But I havent used PIPE for years now. Just saying pipe can be done right with no worries except for the added weight.

im not saying there is anything wrong with pipe, tube is better in most areas but for spreaders and spare tire carriers and things like that its fine and i need to add wieght to the rear of my project, as far as the kinker its just a pain when i have a nice bender to use. and no matter what they dont make as nice of bends.

Yeah, I just purchased a harbor frieght kinker... I'm going to try to bend up 1 3/4 .120 wall DOM to make some tube doors for the runner. There has to be a trick to make some decent bends without the kinks.

I'm practicing on scrap first just to get the hang of it before I use the good stuff. I'm thinking seriously about buying a couple of bags of sand to fill the tube with before I bend it.

Any suggestions for a kinky rookie bender?

the sand helps but the dom wont fit in the pipe dies right. the outside dia is differant. It needs to fit tight in the die to work at all

sell it while its still new?:redneck:

it will work but you will not be happy with the way it leaves the bend sides. sand did seem to help some.

It's strange but the 1 3/4" DOM fits very nicely into the 1 1/2" . I haven't tried bending the DOM yet, but I think it's worthwhile buying a bag or 2 or sand.

I think I'm going to give up on the 90 degree bends and just join the tube at the 3 corners that require the 90 degree bends. However, the pipe that going to follow the A pillar doesn't have to bend to sharp and I think with the right die and the sand, (perhaps a little heat on the back side), it may turn out OK.

i got an 1 1/4 pipe die. i bought a 1 3/4 tube die. i think the od of the 1 1/4 schedule 40 that the guy i bought the bender from was 1 11/16 ish. i think this is the one you are looking for it is for a protools 105 bender. pm me if you need it

I bought 120 lbs of play sand. When I'm done I can practice my sand shots:awesomework:

I took some round tube that was a hair bigger diameter than the material you are kinking :)redneck:) and placed them where the rollers sit. That will help to keep it from denting the material as it bends. I have found a key factor in using that kinker:)redneck:) is to have material that fits the die perfectly.

I have used sand on a couple pipe bends. The first one was about 10 years ago, so I don't recall if the sand was dry or not. The second attempt was more recently, and the sand was very moist. The most recent attempt did not go well. My dad said at Todd Shipyard they would dry the sand before using this technique. So I am thinking possibly my sand was too wet, but I don't know for sure. It could be that I didn't pack it in tight enough.

I welded a couple chunks of angle iron on my rollers to let the pipe slide on no matter what size it was. No more dimples then.

I also cut the sides (under the rollers on the stand itself) open to allow a bend out of the side of another bend.

Roller placement is crucial to a decent bend also.

Pipe quality is key too. Shitty home depot pipe will split where better pipe will stretch and shrink alot more before becoming deformed.

Keep the seam on the side of a bend. If the seam is inside the bend it will wrinkle. If its out side the bend it might split. If its on the side of the bend then the seam doesnt stretch or shrink when bending.

I purchased the DOM tube at Interwest Metals. I hope it's decent quality but I had no way to know.

So what determines good roller placement on these? Do you have a suggestion for a good starting point on where to place the rollers?

Sorry bout the thread hi-jack but I felt there was some good info being shared. A number of us have the HF bender or something similar for back yard projects. Learning how to make the best of it from other's who have used them for a while is helpful... I'm just learning that there's a difference between a pipe bender and a tube bender. In another thread, learning what to watch for a for usage tips with the HF tube notcher.

I'm a fan normally of getting the right tools for the job but the cost of a good bender vs the HF unit was just too much to justify.

I've bent a ton with my HF kinker... It has a bit of a learning curve to it... take your time, leave the die on when test fitting if it stays on the bend... I've never used sand, so no input there...

I'll tell that it doesn't like to bend .250 wall dom... It made a real nice bend, but riped one of the welds on the bottom plate...

I've had mine for 5 years and it's bent stuff on at least 6 rigs that I can think of...

The only guy I know of who might still have a 1.625 die is Keith at BNS.

so pretty much everyone on here either bends tube with a HF bender or doesnt bend tube at all hmmmmmm oh and i dont care what anyone says about the harbor frieght benders....they suck ass! way too much work to try to get a nice bend/kink most rigs that have a cage built with one of those benders looks like it got in a fight with a shopping cart and lost. hack job
