After breaking numerous D60 Ring and pinions I have come up with a solution. By using offset bearings, some grinding and the right parts you can install Dana 70 gears into a 60 housing. The design is such that no machine work is required, just the kit and some grinding. I've also built kits to put Dana 50 gears into D44s and I've put Dana 80 gears into a D70HD housing. The increase in Maximum out put torque is typically 2000 ft-lbs. For example Dana rates their D60 with 35 spline axles at 6000 ft-lbs, and the D70 is rated at 8000 ft-lbs.

do you still use a D60 carrier?

Would I have to swap out my Detroit to like a D70 Detroit?

For 76 you need a D70 carrier or a modified D60 carrier. For the J54 you use a High speed, (3.73 and lower numerically) 44 case. Bear with with me I'm tiring to up load pics now.

How much for the 54 kit?

damn, and I just bought a set of D44 4.88's and 4-series Detroit... :booo: intriguing none the less.....

There's a great tech write-up on all of this coming soon in the next issue of CRAWL Magazine. :awesomework: Good looking stuff for sure!

Are D50 gears available in standard cut? Quick look on Randy's site only list high-pinion gears for D50's. But I'm far from a gear expert.

A standard kit runs about 225 and a deluxe kit runs about 300. With a deluxe kit you start with a bare housing, a standard kit assumes you have some good 44 bearings and parts to start from. I can tailor a kit to your starting point. After I get the J87 details worked out I'm going to work on putting 12B gears into a D44, I know its possible just need to figure out if I can make it cost effective, this would fill in a strength gap for all those low pinion 44s out there.

This is pretty interesting....I saw some talk on Pirate about it but didn't feel like wading through the usual BS to get to the good tech. I'm fixin to pop open my diffs and am expecting to find the usual cracked 6.17's:rolleyes:.

I like the sound of the D70 stuff but it would be hard to do if I had to purchase a couple D70 Detroits. What about with an ARB.......watching the ARB guys open their rear diff and undload the suspension is cool too:awesomework:

I cracked several 7.17s and 5.86s in the d60 before coming up with this. so You got some cracked 6.17s this should fix it for ya.View attachment 46409

Jeff use your mad bargaining skills and get a group buy going for 70 ARB's. I'm in for one...and a 5.13 70 R&P.
