I'm debating on tires. Does anyone have a name, phone, email, website, etc for BFG Krawler stickies. Leaning towards 40x14.5x17. Prefer stickies.

These tires need to work in deeeeep mud and big rocks primarily. This is not for a trail tire. I've seen stickies do remarkable things in slippy slop.

Theres a good chance I'll be following ruts made by 44s, 49s, and so on. Since there is no way I can run those sizes, I need every advantage I can muster.

If that doesn't work, then I'm torn between the Goodyear Wrangler MTR w Kevlar in the 40x13.5x17 or the Pitbull Maddog 39x14.5x17. I understand the MTR is available in sticky or DOT, but the Maddog are all DOT.

I'm interested in opinions of the three, and PLEASE lemme know if someone has contact info on the BFG.

After measuring, I don't think that the 42s are in my best interest.
I already have 17 inch beadlocks.
My problems will be made worse, because the 40 BFGs are supposed to take 10"+ wide rims, and mine are 8.5.
Also, the Maddog web says they are really really heavy tires, noticably more than the BFG web says.

Thanks in advance
Tony

edit: Porter suggested also considering the Maxxis Creepy Crawlers. Looked on Maxxis website, and the 40" seem very intersting. Measure 40.0 tall, 13.5 wide, DOT approved with 'super-sticky' tread that's not recommended for street use. Sounds good. So I'm also considering these.

Waiting for monday to talk to the BFG people.

And I didn't know, but now believe that BFG is completely bought out by Michelin. Also, BFG doesn't administer their 'racer' program in-house, but has an outside agency take care of things.

my 39.5 swampers say to run on a 10 in rim, and so i do on my sammy, but on my buggy i run the same tire on a 8 in rim and i think it works better on the narrow rim, the tire crowns a little more making the tread more agressive.

I know they are larger than you want, but I say 43 inch tsl sx stickies.:awesomework:

Fitting under the fenders is only 1/2 the battle. The other half is when I turn the steering, those gigantic tires are going to hit everything. I think 40 (true inch height) is the max I can run. I feel comfortable that the axles can survive anything I can throw at them. 40 spline, chromoly, low pinion 60 rear, 35 spline, chromoly, high pinion front.

I'll just need to beg, borrow, steal, or buy some (more) Bobby's U-joints.

TTC is inviting all the past winners back to compete again :awesomework:

I have some 54" Boggers and lightweight 4.5 ton axles you can borrow Tony.

Crazy.

Thanks for the offer. I'm thinking about it. But I seriously doubt I can make it work. Even if it's wider, and a lot wider, I've still got too much bodywork to run those tires. And I'd have to complete bastardize the body to make it work. I've got a week of California and a lifetime of future wheeling, and I don't want to loose that future wheeling by completely cutting this up. Don't mind some additional 'trimming', but really don't want to comp cut the rear & loose the front fenders & hood entirely.

Those are interesting axles. How big are the shafts? I've got 40 splined (1.71"), chromoly D60 rear now, and a 35 splined (1.5"), chromoly D60 high pinion front.

Why not borrow a rig and call it yours?

Perfectly acceptable. Don't even have to claim ownership. They don't care.

Just not sure I want to be responsible for someone else's equipment. Would you have borrowed Jason's KOH car for your race?

And the TJ is soooo damn close to being able to be competitive. It's V8, TH400, 4spd Atlas, 1350 shafts, Chromoly alxes, etc.... The only limiting factor is tire size. And I'm not convinced that having (only) 40s will be a liability.

There is some advantage to being narrow. There is some advantage to being able to turn better. There is some advantage to having the HP to turn the tires at greater RPM. I loose all those with a wider, larger.

Plus, I built that TJ. Yeah, Pat linked it. And Dean redid some stuff that's broke. But I still feel like it's my project. So there's some pride of ownership that comes into play also.
