• Help Support Hardline Crawlers :

Built vs Bought

It doesn't matter as long as the owner/driver has the right attitude. I think those stickers give off some attitude though.

My junk is built, but it isn't that great.

Built 3 toyotas in the past from the typical toyota with a doubler and longs to a one ton, linked xtra cab. I tend to enjoy the build process and figuring out what works/doesn't work. After the last one I said I would never build another one but I have found myself hoarding parts for another build I'll start on soon. In the meantime I'll cruise my 3rd gen 4runner and haul everyones broke asses and beer back to camp. Get out in the woods, talk ****, drink beer, have fun.

I have minimal fab skills at best. With that being said I have done a few straight axle conversions and axle swaps but don't have the tools nor the ability to properly fab/build a cage/buggy. I like doing the buy partial build and putting my twist on it, that way the parts I can't do are done then I figured finish it the way I like it. Built or bought whatever works for you may not be what the next guy has time for and the next money for.

FYI, paying someone to build a rig = bought, and anyone that says you can't build one cheaper than you can buy one either buys kits and tabs to assemble, and doesn't use second hand parts. I'll have just over 11k in mine when its done. It has rebuilt Chevy drivetrain and rockwells running on propane. Granted its nowhere near as nice as most of the buggies on here, but theres no way I could've paid to have it built for that price.

I think there is some confusion here. Are you saying bought is always a new build? Paying someone to do the work? Not at all comparable to teh people saying you can buy cheaper than build.
What they are saying is you can buy a pretty legit rig for under 20K with 30K in parts in it and shitloads of labor. You end up with a secondhand rig that has been beat a bit but you can change it to your needs. Everything I've ever built I gave away all of my time and some of my parts money when I sold it as a whole. You always hope that the fun you had in it equals the time put in and money put in to build it.

The first part I was saying that I've seen and heard people have a rig built by someone else and then claim their rig is built not bought. As for being cheaper to build than buy I guess it needs to be determined what kind of rig we're talking about. No doubt in my mind that you can find a well built samurai Toyota jeep or whatever for less than you could build one. But a full tube buggy I'd say is hard to find for cheaper than can be built. I'm 2.25 years into building my buggy and sometimes it take me a minute to realize there are other things in this world besides buggys lol

i miss my old juggy :( wanna sell it back to me ;) i can tell ya i had 3 times invested buikding that juggy for what you paid for it!!! I will buy next time rather than build. Much easier amd dont get burned out. I see so many unfinished projects for sale now days

I think I'll hold on to it for a while my 4 year old would cry if I sold it. It's a well built and capable juggy.

i could build one,but why when you have a good friend[emery built customs] that is damn good at what he does, and besides im to lazy after working a month in saudi arabia, i have to baby sit the arabic for a month, when i come home i just want to wheel and drink jack daniels. beleive it or not but the gin and juice buggy has been wheeled, its not a trailer queen anymore, she has battle wounds to prove it lol!!! i tell everyone that ask ,stephen emery built it ,i just provided the $$$$$.i can remember the days i couldnt afford a bar of soap, now that i can ,im gonna use it.just sayin,if you can afford a builder ,thats great ,if you cant ,i'll bet you got friends that know how.

I build everything of mine. There are several reasons for this. First, half the fun to me is the build. Second, I'm poor. I don't have the bulk cash it takes to buy a rig already finished or partially finished. I have no problem putting 15k in a rig. I just have a problem having 15k at one time lol. I can 500$ something to death though.

I also don't see anything wrong with buying a rig. Not everyone is a fabricator. Just because your not a fabricator doesn't mean you can't be an off-roader. It takes all kinds!!

I'm in the same boat as Pholmann. I would not have put say 15 or so grand to have mine built. But it was not much problem to put $8,000 over a year into what I got. Used parts and doing all the work myself was the only way I was gonna get a "buggy".

It ain't much, but it's mine. Nothing wrong with buying, but there is no way to compare that to the satisfaction/pride you have in something you built with your own hands. Even a sad little rig like mine!

I have built several rigs for buddys and my brother and I have bought several as well. I prefer to buy ones that need work and finish them out or put my touch on them. All 3 out 4 of my rigs i bought built and I have fixed the crapped thats done wrong or upgraded what needed fixed or done whatever that needed to be done to make it mine. If I was to have built all of mine I would probably only have one of them. But I love to wheel and deal so I ended up with some pretty awesome deals.

Either way doesn't matter to me but when I see a sticker that says "built not bought" and it's on a Cherokee with 31s , no bumpers and the krylon touch I just molaugh like :wtflol:

I could care less about built or bought. What is important is not being an ass hat and getting out and wheeling.

There is no doubt buying is a more efficient method both in time and expense. For me, I built my rig for the personal experience and challenges. It was about the journey not the destination.

Wow, I could have BOUGHT a Super nice Rig for what I have invested in my build! I started out with a running unit and thought the conversion to a Tube chassis would be Cheap, $10K later and still not wheeling! I also thought I could finish in 3 Weeks, 4 Months ago!! O well I am having fun and can say I BUILT IT!

My latest, I built. This is the fifth I've built in the last ten years. Dirt driveway, rain, heat, sweat, mosquitos, and gunfights with rogue coons. For me it was not so much the end result that motivated me as it was the learning experience. I started with a welder, drill, angle grinder and a box full of hand tools and during the build I ended up purchasing a jd2 manual tube bender and teaching myself how to use it. Did the drivetrain swap (6.0/4l80/205/60/14 bolt) with a borrowed cherry picker laughing1 It may not be the sexiest rig out there and I probably spent longer on it than I should have, but hell, I'm picky. I didn't want a trail rig so I build something based off a Jeep TJ equipped with v8, tons and can comfortably cruise 80 down the interstate to any trail I care to run :dblthumb:

I would love to take credit for building some stuff, but I am 100% happy that I was able to buy something done instead of re-building my Cherokee. I know it sounds odd saying this, but buying my complete Juggy has been a great financial investment over building/wheeling my 1/2 ton Cherokee this year! LOL Not taking anythign away from my Cherokee....it was built tough with good stuff, but as much as I ride it required constant attention to little things / wear items.
