I have a .500" thick aluminum main belly plate and run M10 countersunk bolts. I just ran the countersink .125 deeper and haven't have any issues. Even with my old UHMW skids that method worked fine.

Though I've used panheads and it still wasn't that bad to remove them when needed. Cut slot and remove like others said.

I got tired of damaging bolts... Mine is mounted on the sides. I still haven't installed my uhmw that is sitting in the garage.

I agree, side mount is best. Much easier to do on a square frame rail than a round tube though.
 
Here's how I did mine.
The pictures pretty much tell the story.
The nuts are welded captive and the holes act as drains too. 1/2" bolts. :Joc:
