Hypothetical question?

I wonder what the price difference would be in the 40 spline 14b axle you described vs
A 05+SD60 with a Currie 35 spline pinion HP70 gear set and 40 spline spool.

??? :wtflol:

Assume using the same shafts in either (you could just as easily upgrade to the big boy RCVs like you have)

Also assuming you are using the stock SD60 housing

Isn't that hp70 gear set fairly expensive? Or is on par with any other decent gear set? My other issue is no gear selection with that option. 5.38 and that's it.

Looked into this after posing these questions. $540 for 4.88 and 5.38 and $518 for 5.13 from currie

Comparatively, yukon gear 4.88's for a 14 bolt are $525 so not too far off price of a decent gear set.

Hopefully the 10 inch gear set or 35 spline pinion works for me, not a 100% sure would be best. I watched some of Dale Larson's videos and if it can take that abuse I will be fine. And if it ever starts giving me problems, I guess I will dig deep and build a never lift 14. Again thanks for all the help.

That's exactly what I was thinking! Wonder if he upgraded the gears to the 35 spline pinion? It would take a beating for sure

The last time I hung out with him he still ran factory knuckles and it was the regular 10 inch stuff. Like I said before I'm not saying the 10 inch is stronger than a full blown custom 14 but for realistic 500 horse motors or something that gets raced every weekend it's just wasting money.

I looked at the 10" oe gear sets but it didn't mention pinion spline count. Is it still the 19 spline, or what ever stock is?

:rolf: Yes, 29 spline, 19 was a typo. Emphasis on baby ****.
Your smart enough to know. Would the heat treat and cryo process make the pinion any stronger?

I really can't say. With gears it is tricky because stronger (or however you define stronger in this case) is not always better. Just look at race gears manufactured from 9310 vs 8620. 9310 is a softer material and handles shock loads better. Also, the heat treating process is different between the two. 8620 gears which is what 99.9% of us are running are factory gears designed to last for a billion miles of street driving so it's really not ideal for rock bouncing but it is what we have to work with. I actually have explored and even went so far as to obtain quotes from an Italian gear manufacturer to make 9310 14 bolt gears. My eyes popped out of my head at the startup cost and minimums. I let the project die because I did not see any ROI.

RCV might be able to answer that question better, but I'm thinking "No, or marginal at best"

I assume you mean the actual pinion shaft, as in not twisting the actual pinion splines on a 29 spline pinion (which is exacerbated in a D60/70 because the splines step down to a much smaller diameter than the rest of the pinion shaft, ie something's gotta give)

Right. I have had awesome luck in the past with it and it definitely helps the teeth for the above reasons redneck mentioned. But o am curious if it makes the pinion itself weaker or stronger. And yeah I asked rcv what it would take to just make me some gears out of the material they make shafts. I'm not even gonna get into that one.

It's all the same hunk of steel isnt it? It should all treat the same though maybe certain processes can increase shear strength while others may resist the twist

Here is a pic of the Currie 35 spline 4:88 gears (top) compared to Dana 80 4:88s. If I was building a 60 I would go for the 35 spline pinion for sure.

If you went with 35 spline, by the time you got a spool machined and Jana kit, and the cost of r&p. It would almost be same price as a 14 bolt. I think the 10 inch r&p is the way to go.

I think the hp 70 would be stronger than a 14 at that point. Assuming they had the same shafts. For that much you could do a hp 10 inch chunk with a custom housing and aftermarket knuckles though.

Isn't the cheapest HP10" dropout $2500? + Housing

No doubt the OEM 10" gears or the D60 35 spline pinion gears are going to be the most cost effective.

I'd drop one of those in and mash my motor till it broke

Holy **** I have never priced one. I'm sorry I just assumed something I shouldn't have

I actually think they are more than that. $2000+ is for a LP10" 3rd...
