Gas pedal too sensitive

Hey dudes, went wheeling for the first time last weekend and found out real quick that my gas pedal is suuuuper touchy. Makes it really hard to maintain a speed or just add a little throttle to crawl up something. I've attached a pic of my pedal.

Any suggestions to make it less sensitive?

(Yes I'm going to lower the pedal and move it further back (left in photo) this weekend too.

The way it is oriented may be part of the problem, but a good old spring could go a long way to creating the feedback needed to control the pedal more effectively

I think also moving it down and in a little like you said would help. I would imagine it would keep your foot in a more natural position.

You may be able to change where the cable connects too. That would change your ratio. It looks like the distance is the same from the center pivot to the cable or the pedal end. That would put it as a 1:1 ratio.
Moving the cable closer to the center pivot would change the ratio. Meaning the pedal may travel 1 inch and the cable only 3/4", (.750:1) ratio or less depending on where the cable is mounted. The same theory applies the throttle body lever as well.
I have similar issue in mine but it is drive by wire. Resting my ankle on tubing seems to help a ton.

Where would the spring go? From the firewall to the pedal upper arm?

Hopefully that and moving down 2-3" (change pedal ratio a little bit since it won't be perpidicular anymore) will do it. The cable to upper pedal arm attachment wouldn't be easy to modify. It's built for that connection location.

When I move the pedal in (left in the photo) that will mean I can't floor it :(.

Heavier/extra throttle return spring on your throttle body /carb will help too. Like the big long carburetor style.

Is that a 2 piece pedal assembly? If so, you should be able to loosen the center pivot bolt and swing the lower pedal assembly downward giving it a longer throw on the pedal overall. If it still does not give you enough play, adjust the cable length to give it a longer throw. This should slow your pedal ratio down. Google Lokar 2 piece pedal assembly. thumb.gif

That would give the cable more resistance which helps with sensitive, right?

Yes, Lokar 2 piece. If I loosen the center pivot and move lower pedal assembly downward then it has less distance until it hits the firewall = less throw, right?

Adding cable length adds slack to the throttle cable, doesn't that just make it more loose?

(I'll read up on Lokar.)

Changing the pedal pivot shouldn't make any difference. That would just put it in a more comfortable/controllable position. Now, if you attach the cable to the pedal closer to the pivot point then it will pull the cable less with the same travel of the pedal.

Once you decide on where to mount the cable on the pedal the open the throttle body or carb to WOT. Loosen the pedal pivot and let the pedal rest on the floor. Then retighten.

Currently the pedal is set for WOT in that method. But it's "out" toward the driver's seat too much. My foot literally cramps up. May have to loose some throttle to even be able to drive comfortably.

There's no receiver on the pedal accept for at the top.

Is the pedal in the resting position in the pic? If so it looks like you could stand to lose a couple of inches of cable.

Yes. And Yes.

Last week was my first ride, before cutting cable I wanted to make sure. (It's tough to lengthen a cable! Will shorten.) thumb.gif

Looking to build a strategy for less sensitivity and then execute this weekend.

Right now I'm thinking
1) move down 3"
2) adjust lower pedal arm in (left) 3"
3) add long carb style springs to throttle body

Unless I move the firewall hole there might be a lot a nasty turn in the throttle cable. It's a bitch to move though.

I would just do one mod at a time and then drive and see how you like it. This way you wont have guess what to undo to get the pedal the way you want.

Good point. I'll start with moving the pedal down and in (left in pic) because I have to otherwise I can barely drive it. :rolf:
