Who here fishes using a kayak? Couple guys at work been talking about it and it sounds somewhat enjoyable. What kind of kayak do you guys use, how stable is it, can it hold a beer cooler?

I have a fs12T from bass pro shops, it's big, stable and comfortable, and will hold all the gear I want

and a 10ft Pelican sit on top, it's just about too small for me, but I kept it as a loaner, and I'll use it in smaller creeks for quick floats with less fishing, as it it way more manuverable and quicker handling

Jesus.....it's all I hear about my brother in law has 5 one for each river lake creek you name it. They money invested seems like you could have a nice bass tracker....that's just me tho
They have special tournaments just for them.
It's pretty easy to have 3-4 grand in one.
Just like any hobbie, you can blow as much money as you want to on it.

Yeah some guys get super serious about eletronics and anchor systems, storage, etc etc. I don't give a **** about paddling around on a lake or fishing a tournament.

I just have cheap stuff and 2 walmart fishing poles, 1 flipping rod and 1 ultralight jig rod, and a vest to put my tackle in. I have less than $1K in 2 boats and associated junk.

I actually very rarely fish from my boat, I'd rather hike and wade non-floatable creeks (which if you didn't know is technically trespassing in TN, so YMMV).

Hiking 2-3 miles up a rocky creek bed to catch a 3 lb smallmouth or slab redeye on ultralight tackle in an eddy pool or under a waterfall is what I like. thumb.gif

Me and the wife have two Jackson fishing kayaks think I got about 1600 in the pair. We really enjoy it it's how we spend most of our summer.

Always thought it'd be fun to have a couple of them, but probably never will. I don't like blistering heat with little/no shade, mosquitoes, and I just picture a snake or something swimming over and attacking me in it. Lol.

But, out of curiosity, is it legal to just put in anywhere on any body of water with a kayak? Or do you have to have some sort of numbers or whatever like boats? I don't know **** about marine hobbies.

Re: fishing kayaks

No reg needed in TN unless you power it.

Any navigable waters are legal to float as long you can find a spot to legally put in and take out. Touching bottom/bank is technically trespassing on small water that is not "owned" by the army corp of engineers

I can go down the hill from my house and do up to 9 miles (after a rain) by water with less than 5 miles of road driving, and that's honestly the only place I go. I might float the Caney Fork once every couple years, but it's too busy on weekend to be enjoyable

I have a Jackson Coosa HD..

Love it.. Hauls anything I need & I can stand and fish all day.. I love gettin back in those places no one else can. Nothing like some skinny water therapy.

Once your set up it's much cheaper than a weekend of riding.

I still fish big lakes out of a boat, but I much prefer to fish a small lake or float a creek and fish out of my kayak.

I bought one right around when I graduated H.S. for $250 iirc, I still have it 12 years later. We use them all the time during the summer, one of my favorite investments ever. Grab some beer and go. thumb.gif

Everyone in my and my fiance's immediate family have one. Couple canoes too. I bought a Mad River 14' last year finally.. love love love it.

:dunno: why when you could fish out of a Ranger, triton etc. Sorry but I had to ask I just don't get! Tony made me do it :****:

For Alabama, any free flowing navigatable water that isn't land locked (aka any creek) is public water and you can access them at about any bridge (which is roadway aka public property). You can't just go toss it in someone's pond obviously, but if the creek flows through their backyard you can float it as long as you have put in at a public place and you don't get off of the creek bank onto their property.

I use google maps to find and fish a lot of new places.. Works great for hitting new spots.

No registration required as long as you don't have a trolling motor.

Had a 14 mile float/fish planned for Saturday but the storms are gonna push it back to the 28th..

10-4 if your ever up my way Knoxville I can show you some strip pit ponds with some 10plus bass.

I mean I don't come up that way much, but I'll make a special trip for some good bass fishing!

And what I meant by places a Ranger can't is watersheds and stuff like found on the national forest or owned by the state. Most of them just don't have a boat ramp or have just a gravel bank.. You could probably drag a little flat bottom and a trolling motor into them, but they don't do as well in creeks with rapids so I thought the kayak was the better option.

Trust me.. I'd much rather be in a Ranger when it comes time to fish Guntersville or a lake like that..

I'm picking up a little 14ft flatbottom with a 20hp Evinrude on the back today.. Gonna be my "Ranger" for a little while lol..

Sounds good to me I've caught many fish in a 14ft flatbottom! I've had some weird dealings with yeka guys on the waters around here. I can understand going place a big bass boat but around here it's the opposite ! They are always getting in my way on the lake . I caught one in the face last year with a 10xd that sob does come around me anymore needless to stay.

Re: fishing kayaks

I bought a cheap one from Menards a couple years ago but have only had it out a couple times. I always say I'm gonna take it out more often but hardly do. Once we move down to my dad's farm this year I'll have a creek in my back yard so I'm hoping to use it a lot more. Always wanted to do a weekend long camping trip out of it and just float the creek and set up camp somewhere as we go.
