I read that. Assuming it is correct, pit bull terriers are responsible for more attacks causing bodily harm than all other breeds COMBINED. :omg:

yes, and I will tell everyone why, and people can stop pissing over what thier "uncle fred" told them:rolleyes:

The breed has HUGE genetic issues that have caused centuries of unpredictablity.. thus reasons for one being gentle, and another attacking without provacation..

when these used for fighting in the beginning centuries ago, they were made aggressive by adding gunpowder to thier diet. it deteriorates the brain cells, taking away reasoning and leaving only instinct, and not much of that..

well, the problem is that there were billions affected, and those billions breed with clean billions  kinda like adding smallpox to the water. welllllll, to rid a bllodline of this it takes roughly 500 new clean bloodlines to ADD enough cellular capacity to the brain to rid of it. so basicly, thats dirty bred to clean..dirty bred to clean.. 500 times, WITHOUT ONE SINGLE flaw or interruption or your back at square one..

gee, do you think that will EVER be accomplished? I doubt it. and its also very sad, I love the breed, well, the ones that dont attack:booo:

I dont think Pit owners should be bashed, only the ones that refuse to accept the recorded and genetic facts and blindy try to re-enter unpredictable and violent animals into society that are clearly a threat instead of locking them down or better yet exterminating them. the fact is, it would clean the breed and rid ITSELF of the bad name and get it back on track. so basicly the OVER lovers have hurt the breed by doing this instead of fixing the issue:mad:

Most breeds don't have "lock on" bites though.

And yes I know most are friendly but I will never own one.

Pit Bulls have locking jaws. NO! The pit bulls jaws are the same as any other
breed of dog! Any Veterinarian can verify this is simply a myth. Pit Bulls have
been bred to not let go, however, their jaws are not locked.
Actually pit bulls do less damage because they bite and hold, where other
dogs bite/release/bite that causes more bleeding and damage.

The American Temperament Test Society (POBox 4093, St Louis, and MO 63136 Phone 314-869-6103, in the 24 years of testing over 185 breeds of dog, rates the Pit Bull at 83.1%. This is higher than the national average for all other breeds of dog. This means the Pit Bull has the best overall temperament. The American Pit Bull Terrier also rates high in the Canine Good Citizens Test. The Pit Bull is used for Search and Rescue and as a Therapy dog. One Foundation uses them along with other breeds for bite prevention and responsible ownership classes in the Washington School Districts. In our country more families own the Pit Bull than any other dog breed in existence.

Bottom line: Pit bulls are bred for their tenacity and "game" (their drive to complete their "task" for lack of a better word, even in light of physical pain or other factors), thus they CAN be a dangerous animal when paired with an irresponsible owner. Responsible pet owners train and restrain their animals properly, especially when around children.

As long as people think it's "cool" and "macho" and "gangster" to own a mean pit bull, there isn't going to be any solution to the problem. Bad pet owners exist, and can turn any breed into a vicious animal, but that doesn't mean it's right to restrict the rights of responsible pet owners.

I have only 1 pitbull rule. If it is seen on my street not on a leash it will be shot without hesitation. I have been attacked several times, from the common stray to family dog's. I still love dogs, but am extremely protective of my family. The pits are usualy pretty good alone, but when there are 2 or more **** gets all whacked.

Dammit... I guess i'd better go shoot my Ram.. it'll do more damage then a kia :booo: It definitely wasn't the drivers fault that the truck got in a wreck.

And yes my brother got attacked by one as well when he was younger. Doesn't mean he wants them in a cage and have to stay in the cage.. Hell that's what makes the dogs act the way they do anyways (atleast one of the reasons).. no chance to socialize.

It's plain assinine to proclaim "bully breeds" :looser: safe just because of a single incident. Especially with so many stories of the complete opposite experience.

yep thats the only "good experience" ever recorded with these breeds

i have been to the ER for bites before myself... we've had to put down dogs that could not be rehabilitated. there is still more good than bad.

the dog we just fostered was charged by a yapping pomeranian (unleashed)while we were running. i stopped, told her to sit... she never moved or made a sound. i grabbed the yapping pomeranian and held it until the owner got to me. i handed her sweet snarling bundle of joy and commended her on being a responsible owner for letting her dog run around unleashed. if that had been my APBT or AMSTAFF running around free, i am sure she would've called the cops. :looser:

That wasn't geared at you. That was actually geared towards Andy's comment.
My son was in the hospital as well with MANY stitches. This is a bad subject for us too. My son still has scars and they told us that any closer to his temple and he wouldn't be alive. He was bit in the face.

My deepest sympathies and prayers to you and yours Mrs. C.
I can only hope you will forgive my rashness and lack of civility.

this was at the top..
you guys can argue the RESULTS of an attack all you want.. thats the problem, nobody ever fights hard enough to FIX the underlying problem.

My understanding is that you think the underlying problem is genetics, right? The fact that they were fed gunpowder for years (which is more than likely more of a myth than reality in most cases) really would have nothing to do with the "genetics" of the breed as a whole, but could cause a single dog to be pre-disposed to aggressive behavior.

The more likely scenario is that dogs that were better fighters survived the fights, and were bred to other dogs that survived the fights, thus traits of game and ability to withstand pain were passed on through the bloodlines. This is a no-brainer.

So what's the solution here? Clarify, because I'm not quite getting it. The pit bull breed will continue to exist, and they will continue to be loyal, tenacious, "game" animals as long as it's a trait that breeders want and actively breed for. Focusing and harnessing that energy is the important part, and so is understanding that this is a dog that is pre-disposed to these things, thus it needs more training and better owner responsibility.

2pwrlftrs4u - congrats on your dog's newfound friend. I had an american staffordshire before, and he was one fine dog. I was so pleased with him, I selected a pit-lab mix at the pound the next time I was ready for a new family addition.

To my absolute dismay, the pit-lab mix who is zero pit and all lab in behavior (and tounge) has been attacked several times now. Both as a puppy out on a romp where a boxer owner had the dog off leash, unrestricted in the yard - not fenced in, and as an Adult in our own home, with Brett's (my boyfriend)'s Golden Retriver. The golden has a special fondness for anything furry that moves or squeaks.... this includes but is not limited to: other dogs, cats, rats, mice, birds, and snakes.... she nailed a coyote in the yard a couple months ago...

This thread is all just a bunch of people expressing opinions, but I did want you to know (2pwrlftrs4u) that I UNDERSTAND what you were trying to say. In this type of forum, it will always be difficult to avoid conflict - becuase we all as americans have the freedom of choice and freedom of speech. We all choose to excercise those freedoms differently. But I hope your warm and sunny day wasn't lost due to the drama in this thread.
to those on the forum that have had negative experience, I do not wish to offend or anger you... it's truly sad that the situation was not properly mitigated so that you could avoid any dangers. The responsibility needs to be full circle, not just breeders, but owners, and general public from an education perspective. Education helps everyone prepare and plan better - however it doesn't solve the problem, but more along the lines of setting a roadmap for better decision making. I doubt that 'eliminating' an entire breed will be an answer, if anything that would make a dangerous dog that much more of a coveted item to those people who are less able to be responsible.

Agree 100%. Eliminating one breed only means irresponsible pet owners will end up finding another breed to abuse, brutalize and otherwise turn into vicious, nasty animals.

yep, it wont be long till another breed takes the bad press... it was the german shepard for a while, then doberman, then the rottie, now any of the bully breeds get labled. for all anyone knows half the dogs in these stories were not even APBT or AMSTAFF (many dogs fit the description). for a long time human aggressiveness was bred out of these breeds... any dog that showed agression to a human was killed. do some research on dog fighting.

Are you kidding? Canines have been bred for centuries to be pre-disposed to some behavior or another.

Not kidding at all, being bred for something and being genetically pre-disposed are two different and completely separate things. Dogs are all genetically similar. The differences are in traits that breeders try to "breed out" or "breed in". The reason that dogs are domestic and wolves, for example, are not is that dogs are not genetically pre-disposed to be viscious to humans AS A SPECIES. Years of breeding can bring out aggressive traits, but, it is much more likely that a viscious dog has an idiot for an owner. The other thing that happens all too often is irresponsible breeding. Meth heads think it is a good idea to have a mean pit. . .

Now, for an interesting story. My club went out for a little light wheelin' on Sunday down by the river. There are some little canyons to crawl around in and a nice parking area to have a fire and watch the action con cerveza and hot dogs. Upon arrival, what did we discover? One very dead brindle Pitbull in the middle of our parking area. Of course, I was the one designated to investigate. Single gunshot wound to the head at close range. Still even had its collar on. One has to wonder why someone would do such a thing. . .

LOL nice uneducated response. :haha:

You do know which dog has more attacks per year and trainers see the most of bad behaved right.....

You family friend the golden retriever

250px-Golden-Retriever-'Timo'.jpg

First I say let's see the proof!!!!!!!! Oh and I want it in percentages not attack #s

The retriever next door to me is a superwuss, My female lab/rot mix dominates the hell out of that poor dog. I have been around Pitts I trust & those I don't. My son has one that is the sweetest dog ever. His friend has one that I don't like at all, tried to bite me for no reason. I whaled him with a 2x4, he leaves me alone now.

Most mean dogs are beaten into being that way, our pit mix nearly clamped on my hand once because she had been beaten to the point she was on the defensive if you looked at her, she's never been aggressive to me otherwise. Beaten dogs that feel threatened are the ONLY dogs I've ever been worried about, dogs that are treated decently are good dogs unless they've been trained to be otherwise. And for the record, golden retrievers and other family dogs are the biggest pain in the ass to train or deal with IMO, my buddy has a golden that is dumber than a sack of hammers, and doesn't listen AT ALL.

Of course abused animals have good reason to be harmful, thats so obvious it dosnt even need ot be brought up. I am talking about the plain and simple fact they are un-predictable, period. too many, thousands, or millions have attacked and ripped people and kids to shreads or worse, death ( im not sure if thats worse or better).. and a larger percentage of these were owned by good families and unabused, and then one day just snapped and ripped some poor kid or adult to death. I am not here to bash the breed, i love them, but i will not be someone who plays blind to the facts and statistics. they are real and they stand on thier own.

Example: I have a friend that has 2 pits, papered, champion blood, trained very well, and i loved them dearly, everyone did!!! they were so buttery sweet and loving and the family treated them like gold. ****, they slept on him and the wifes bed or sometimes with the kids. they were the healthiest animls Ive ever seen. ....until.... one day one of the kids was looking at one of them, and smiled and said "woof!" and the dof attacked her face, she was mutilated... her life was ruined right there........

after this tragedy was past (will it ever be?) it was just a huge puzzle, the family wrote it off and a fluke thing..until 2 years later, the other dog attacked a neighbor, with NO provocation, who was also someone who loved them dearly.. he was lucky, only a shredded calf and shattered mutilated wrist..

Its not just the owner and training, they are unpredictable and attack without provocation.Argue it all you want pit lovers, but stories just like this of pits with fairy tale lives happen almost everyday.

They no more predictable than a child molester, but, do you campaign for them and blame it ALL on thier parents when they molest? hell no, because we all know that most of them are just sick, and uncurable..

Sounds like your buddy has a badly trained dog, not a dumb one. Just curious(if he has any)how his kids behave. Do they listen? When he tells them to go to bed, brush there teeth, or quit picking on another kid do they listen? Probably not.
Bully dogs are no diffrent than Bully kids. The parents raise them that way.

Yes on rare occasions you will have great parents that have a lousy kid. It's VERY rare though. Same with Dog owners.
Take a punk parent(Bully) If they could choose; what would the kid be? Tough bad attitude guy probably wants a kid just like himself. If he doesn't get one, he will still raise(train) him to be that way.

I'm not going to do it but I could continue this into race and our country's prejudice and assumtions of color also.

i knew that someone would attempt to blame the kids, and the answer is no or i would not have stated they had failry tale lives, his kids were very loving and gentle, and yes i do know some kids do that and yet the parents dont beat thier ass for it, and they should.. animals are not punching bags..

All I know is I am tired of all those damn greenies going up on my trails and dumping empty beer cans next to the trees I went up there to hug...:flipoff:
