anyone run michelins?

curious if anyone has run the big XL's or versions of them. how they perform in different conditions ie snow, mud, pavement, sand, treadlife etc.
 
I ran the 11.00R16 XZL's on my old Runner... they were a little taller than my buddies 39.5 TSL's, but way skinny. In mud they were OK, seemed to do OK in rocks, great on dry dirt trails, never had them in the sand... worst tire I have ever seen in my life in the snow. Absolutly horrible, even when aired down.

However, I don't think you could ever find a big tire that will ride, drive, and handle as good as these did on the pavement.

If I were going to build another rig that needed big tires and was going to be a street rig, I would run them again.

For a daily driver / weekend warrior they are fine if you stay out of the snow.

For a stricly wheelin' rig, I would get something else.
 
lookin for tires for a wheeler, toy bodied truggy type thingy, lookin at the 48s maybe 53s??? will be used on every terrain.

also lookin for tires for my superduty, sees a lot of pavement, dirt, little slop, little sand and lots of snow, was thinking those 40"ish xl's or xml's....?
 
I tried a set of 53's. They absolutley SUCKED! Groved them, siped them , roasted them til til rubber was flying off. I would hit a rock or root and slide all over. They still would not perform with no air. Absolutley the worst tires ever.

They did ok when they fell off the inner bead and I finished the day wheeling with 2 tires off the rim.

I have a set of the 48in XLs on my ford and i will second that they suck in all offroad situations. Here is one picture and story why they suck. With the truck like it is in the picture I could not make it up the two ledges and get out of this hole in 4wd. When the truck was smaller on 39.5 TSLs I could make it through in 2wd. I would definately go with a large swamper.

They were designed for large / heavy vehicles (think 10000lbs and up) - and in that respect they're great. They need the weight to perform better.

From the sound of it, they're not going to fit the bill for either of your rigs...
 
Well, their roots are in military and agricultural. In respect to both they're not meant to go real fast, just hold a lot of weight and provide traction offroad. I'm sure the Super Duty could run 'em, but they're less than ideal for that platform - on and off-road. If you're getting them for free, might be fun to try it out for a while.

If it were my money, I'd opt for something a little tamer for the Super Duty - Toyo M/Ts or Wild Country TXRs. IMHO the TXRs are great aggressive tire for the daily driver.

Anywho, I hate to see the XLs get a bad rap. They're very purpose-built - for heavy rigs.
 
well the duty has 35 bfgs on it right now and it goin up a lil more. im happy with the tires ive got but want a little bigger so thinking about some swamper radials, toyos, nittos etc but for the price of these i thought id see if it would be worth buying some 20s to run em. i need new wheels regardless, just depends....
well, anyone have any possiive feedback?

oh, and TXRs have got to be the worst tire on earth!!!!!!!
bfgs toyos, even rvts or wildcats if youre a schwabbie loser but txrs are absolute JUNK!!!

Actually I AM a Schwabbie loser so - :flipoff:

Seriously though, the BFG's I have are junk. They might keep up with the Wildcats I used to have off-road, but on a daily driver they slip and slide all the fawk over the place.

TXRs, honestly can't speak to the offroad performance but they are solid on-road. We have a set siped and studded for my wife's 4Runner for the winter. Its sure-footed and solid for that purpose.
