My passenger side manifold has that heat riser valve which keeps leaking so I'm looking at a different year to eliminate that. A 89 has a different style with an exhaust donut but looks similar , has any one switched before or is there a better year manifold to use?

I've run headers on all my sbc stuff in the past..my 1975 stock manifolds did not have any heat riser crap attached to the manifold...

Its possable to cut out the flapper in the heat riser and weld up the hole... But since manifolds for SBC are cheap and usually easy to replace.. I would go the route you are. With a completly different manifold..
