At 5:00 p.m. on Saturday June 17th, the deputies in our Foothills Detachment responded to a 911 call reporting that a jeep had drove approximately 1000 feet off a cliff on the 520 trail at Evans Creek ORV. The caller had drove over 45 minutes from the accident scene to the town of Wilkeson, where he was able to get cell phone service; he told dispatchers that a man and a woman were inside the jeep when it went over the embankment, and they were seriously injured or deceased.
Deputies met the caller in Wilkeson and received directions from the 911 caller on how to get to the crash scene; they drove to the Evans Creek campground, up the 7930 Forest Service Road to the 520 trail. At the trailhead, deputies had to park their patrol cars and hike another ¼ mile up a trail that could only be navigated by off road 4x4 vehicles.
When #PCSD deputies arrived they slid 250 feet down the cliff, where they found the female crash victim and several good Samaritans who has climbed down to provide aid and comfort. The woman was conscious but suffering from critical injuries, and was covered in coats and blankets provided by the witnesses. Deputies slid another 300 feet down the cliff, where they located the badly damaged jeep and the male driver, who was deceased.
A full scale response was called out to the scene, including multiple deputies with our Search & Rescue Team, medics with East Pierce Fire Department, Search & Rescue volunteers on ATVs, Tacoma Mountain Rescue SAR Volunteers, a medical aid helicopter from Airlift Northwest, and several park rangers – as well as numerous citizens helping on scene.
When back up arrived on scene, two medics and two rope rescue tech deputies traversed over the cliff and down to the female passenger; the medics were able to stabilize the victim, splint her leg, then assisted the deputies in placing her in a litter (metal basket used as a stretcher in hazardous terrain). Search & Rescue used a rope system to carry/pull the victim over 250 feet up the cliff.
Rescuers were able to get the female victim up to the trail, where a doctor who is Search & Rescue volunteer was able to again stabilize and intubate her. The female victim was placed into the back of a citizen’s 4x4 pickup truck and transported down the trails to a waiting ambulance; paramedics and flight nurses transported the woman to a waiting medical helicopter at an private airfield in Wilkeson. At 11:29 p.m. she was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment – nearly 7 hours after the crash.
Deputies remained at the scene throughout the scene, and rescue crews returned in the morning to recover the body of the male driver.
Our Search & Rescue coordinators expressed their gratitude to all of the citizens, volunteers, and first responders who worked together to save the female passenger’s life. It was a long and difficult rescue and recovery - truly an outstanding team effort!
