So school me on out of the country travels... What do I need to know about traveling now a days. Last time I flew anywhere was probably three years ago at least.

What is lap top travel regs?

Anything I need to know about leaving the country?

Dr said something about since I need to get a chicken pox vaccine and I'm going to travel, may want to think about.. Um was it Hepatitis A? Something like that. But he said Japan isn't really a big worry for it.

How about how long did it take from the start to finish to get your passport?
Heard that can be awhile these days??
 
I was told 3 weeks at most when I applied. But I went in Feb 23rd and got it April 4th. The lady at City hall had to call several times to find out it's status, cause it wasn't tracking online. There was concern about my picture cause I always get the red eye and they couldn't get all of it out, but apparently the government didn't seem to think it was bad.

You can pay $75 for expedited service and receive the passport in 2-3 weeks. One of my employees just got hers in 2.

Gubment/military passports take way less time. And are way more better.

I suggest traveling light. You shouldn't have any problems going anywhere on a vacation. There are certain areas that you have to watch out for diseases. When I got back from Turkey, they checked my shoes of all things for some sort of contaminant and my choice was to either wash them in a bleach solution or throw them away. :eeek:

It really depends on what country you are visiting. I had to get 4 or 5 shots before traveling to China and I had to get a traveling Visa. If you call the local Health Department they can give you a list of recommended vaccinations for the country/area you are traveling to. Or you can just look it up over at http://wwwn.cdc.gov/Travel/contentVaccinations.aspx

For Japan: http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/destinationJapan.aspx

Don't forget, if your traveling to Canada as of June you need a Passport or special drivers license to get in and out of the country.
 
I think in Japan they drive on the "other" side of the road. :eeek:

That website is great for disease stuff, but you should be fine in Japan.
Laptops will be fine, you just need to take it out and put it in the little tub by itself to be x-rayed. Be sure to hold on to it and be the last thing that goes in before you walk through the detector. If it's first, then it will be sitting there while you have all your other **** getting ready and someone could walk off with it. I always carry it with the bin and right before I walk through, put it on the conveyor belt then I will be waiting for it, not the other way around. They will announce on the plane when you can use it and when to shut it down, but generally during take off and landing is when it's supposed to be off.

LOL the kids will love that. He's going to need more then pizza though. He's in for a long couple weeks with my daughter. Just mention Japan and she starts crying. She's going to totally flip out.

OMG Reality has set in now that the flights are booked. I have this fear of not understanding the people, the signs etc and ending up in Africa or something. :mad:

Costco has these Chicken Pot Pies that are great, 6 minutes in the microwave. And they have chimichanga's and buritto's! You should be set! :D

My brother spent a couple of years in Japan and a friend was an English teacher there for two years, they both enjoyed it. Do you have a guide lined up?

haha I was thinking alcohol but I'm not sure he'd drink it, He'd probably give it to my daughter.

Now that I know which airline, i've been reading about the airport and procedures.
 
I've been to japan many times.

where you going?

Laptops- you just have to take them out of the carry case when you go through security.

don't were any jewelry when you go to the airport.
Carry a small bag.. put everything in it, then throw it on the belt.
don't where lace up shoes, because they make you take them off in the airport. were somthing that you can slip into easily ( i prefer my Birkenstocks.).

I travel ALL the time for work (internationally).. any questions you have i can try to answer.

This is my flight info lol ~You will be flying on May 12th, leaving at 12:52pm from Seatac. You will fly directly to Tokyo, but after that they put you on a couple planes...ugh! Anyway, you will arrive in Nagoya at 9:30pm on the 13th

As a visitor to Japan you are required to perform certain Customs procedures which are an important part of entry into and departure from the country. This information is prepared by Japan Customs to assist foreign visitors coming to Japan by providing information about Customs regulations and procedures. The following knowledge will be helpful during Customs examination.

If you have any question, please feel free to ask a Customs officer.



Declaration
You are required to make a written declaration about your belongings.
Two copies of a written declaration are required, if you have unaccompanied baggage.
Customs declaration forms are available on the plane, the ship, or at Customs.


The green and red channel system
Please choose either the green channel or the red channel.
The green channel is for passengers who have no goods subject to duty and/or tax and goods not prohibited or restricted for import.
The red channel is for all other passengers.

*Please pay duties and/or taxes at the bank in the Customs inspection zone.
When the value of the dutiable goods exceeds three hundred thousand yen (300,000yen), Customs procedures for commercial cargo are required.



Is this like Canada where if you buy stuff you have to claim it on the way home? or even going into Japan I have to itemize the stuff I have?
 
The customs information is nothing to worry about, they will give you a form on the plane, just fill it out and hand it to customs when you get off the plane in tokyo.

You only need to declare stuff you are leaving.. i.e. gifts, booze, tobacco.
don't bring any fruit vegies, dairy or meat product as they will get confinscated upon entry to japan.

The tokyo airport is HUGE. when you get off the plane look at the board to see where your next flight is, and haul ass to the gate.

for domestic flights, you used to come into tokyo Narita, but then had to get on a bus to the domestic terminal for your connecting flights (up to 45 min away). and i don't remember the name of the airport. hopefully this has changed.

Seatac to tokyo is an 8.5 hour flight. (approx).

When you come to the states you can bring 800 bucks worth of goods back. Don't lie about it. if they catch you.. its a PITA.

if you bring back say 1000 worth of stuff, you will have to pay duty on 200 of it.

My wife and daughter did it on their own once and it was their first over seas travel.. so you'lll be Ok.

OH, the green red channel thing.. red if you are planning on leaving goods in japan, otherwise green.. 16 years of travel i have never went red.

Well I guess that's good then cause I don't plan to bring anything with me besides clothes and such.

Mark mentioned 2 other "Puddle jumpers" from Tokyo. So I'm gonna guess two other plane transfers but I will know more once I get the ticket/itinerary.

I hate those small planes too. LOL Nothing like little propellers out your window to make you feel safe.

So are there little plug ins on planes now or do you depend on battery for lap top use?

You're going to Japan....that shrine will be very small. Probably not worth the effort to get there as you will end up missing Mike even more. :;
