gearing ?

I know they make thick gears for installing on high gear cases, but can you go the opposite way? Built a set of axles for a mud truck customer: 4.56s, detroits, et al in a hd44 and 14 bolt and now he wants to put the axles in a 87 blazer he has but doesn't want the 4.56 gears and would rather have something like 3.42/3.73. Doesn't the 14 bolt just use one case for all ratios like a 9" ford? The frt is were the problem will be i'm guessing? He's wanting to save money and just buy a frt gear if possible.
