Helmets at Harlan????

Well ****! I guess that means me and JD cant get a lil tipsy and ride down to the dairy hut and try to park our rigs on the picnic table! :driving:

we will play lookout for ya.... :dblthumb: we can use cb or cell phone to let know if its clear. I don't think we will have a problem being that the hardline isn't one of their normal planned events. I think the troopers will be there the following week for Fall Crawl.

you can dump your trash at the trailhead store.

The city of evarts is the ones hurting themselves or being hurt by the helmet rule and road blocks. Just so everyone knows, i dont have a problem with either but honestly i just dont want to be hastled by cops when i go wheeling. All this means to me is either stay in putney or on the park property.

The way I see it the park could take advantage of the situation and build bunk houses or cabins to rent out. Also, if they don't already, a big dumpster at the trail heads would probably be a good idea.

I love harlan, I will always go, just may have to change accommodations.

Teamwork, that's what I'm talkin' about! :drinkers:

Its not the city of Evarts..... its state troopers comming in there. The city is doing what they can to protect us. Thats why they are bring up the helmet issue because troopers are looking for reason to write tickets. I assume a trooper has given a ticket to someone for no helmet and they have addressed it with city of Evarts and they are just giving us a heads up

I've lived in Kentucky my whole life, right outside the capital, always heard rumors thats where all the troopers start out, got some confirmation on that from some locals,,, more than one. Probably just some new guys trying to prove a point. But they'll still take you to jail. Just saying.

All I know about it is what they told my buddy Friday night, what the constable told me and what Brian (Highrolrcustoms) posted earlier.
Love Black Mountain and the convenience of going into town but damn sure know I don't wanna spend the night in the Harlan County pokey and have to call my better half... :****:

There is a dumpster at the little garage beside of the campground and zipline, I don't think there will be any issues at this ride in Oct. I was stopped by the cops in the road block and all he said was were just checking to see if any one is drinking it was hardly a stop but I guess if I had a beer in my hands that would be different but I don't drink either I think they were just thring to keep the event going smooth and not let the drinking get out of hand on the highway One of my friends did geet arrested in the campground at the dairyhut for just moving his truck from one spot to another, cop was watching him and got him as soon as he parked he stayed all night in the pokey. Just don't have beer cans all in the cab or floor when you get on the road and you will have a great time and hope this will become a yearly event. There is a lot of spots for camping up past the check in just for those that don't know

My last post about it but I've heard this happening a bunch, I'll be on the other side, good luck guys/girls, see you on the trails in October

Dammit... :spin: Fawkin police.

It must be luck of the draw because what mike d was talking about (5bros) is we went through a road block in may. Granted it wasn't an event, but still Kentucky state troopers. Im not going to claim anywhere near sobriety, but lets say I was drinking all day and came from the steakhouse where we stacked pitchers on the table. He looked at my license and walked back to my tag which had expired two days prior. He came back handed me my license and said have a good night. I thought for sure I was going to jail, and by all rights I should have. I guess I got lucky. I would say they shove the stick up their ass for the events. I would say the hardline ride will be ok, but the fall crawl maybe not. We will be on the putney side for the fall crawl anyway.

This is nothing new. It's been going on since 2009. On event weekends expect road blocks. This won't be considered an event weekend to the county, even though it sounds to me like there will be more people here than at Fall Crawl. Now when they ride past the camp and see it full, it may change things.

My rule of thumb for Harlan is this, I limit myself to 4-5 beers throughout the day unless I have someone to drive the rig back to camp.

The guys willing to run through and call back will eliminate the threat of the road block I'd think.

2-3 fall crawls ago there was some ass hole in a nice Rockwell buggy on 44s running around drunk and pretty much bullying his way. He'd drive over tires of rigs he didn't know or scoot them out of the way with his buggy not knowing if there were kids around or somebody laying under working. Later in the weekend the dumb ass must have dropped his beer and hit the rear steer control when he reached for it because he rolled over in the ditch on the opposite side of the road from lower rock garden. People like that are the reason they are cracking down and the reason places get shut down.

^^^^ This.....can't stand an "ignorant" drunk!! >:(

Btw AdamF you better post up again....you dancing with the devil on your post count!! skully ;D

well said! Some people ought not be allowed to have anything to drink. They get arrogant and wreckless. No use for a belligerent drunk or drinker.

Re:

We just got back and had a few rigs running with no plates and past cops a few times and nothing. They were monitoring the stop sign intersection but that was it. Saw several big buggies and no helmets

You're right behind me, better watch yourself! Lol

The only roadblock I've hit, I apparently caught the end of. As I stopped, the cop said "have a nice day" and they shut it down.. lol I did hit another one on the rd in Virginia while I was towing home. They told me about a broken lens on my trailer, which I acknowledged I broke with a hammer. lol

The only time anyone of my friends has been stopped in Evarts was my buddy Bull. They told him he needed a brake light (had no rear lights on his buggy at all) and sent him on his way. We installed a $5 tail light from the parts store before the next trip.

FYI...I called Evarts just a few minutes ago since I didn't want to buy a helmet and find out the hard way that it wasn't "good enough". The first lady I spoke with said "any ol helmet will be fine" then she says wait and hands the phone to another lady who gets on and tells me that the helmets must be DOT approved.

So...that rules out the standard AXEL helmets, skate helmets, bmx helmets, etc. Staying on the Putney side is looking better and better...

I know they haven't really pushed the issue yet...but I think we can all agree it will come around sooner than later and I wanted to be prepared and have the right information. It's looking like it might be cheaper to register my junk.
