I want to put together a Dana 44 front axle with the width of a Wagoneer or J10 and am wondering if anybody knows if Jeep had an 8 lug Dana44? If not, any recomendation on a good year of Wagoneer Dana 44 that I should use to put my mid seventies Chevy Dana44 8 lug stuff on?

Ian,

What side do you want the pinion on, passenger or driver? Early wagoneer ('79 and earlier) 44's are passenger drop.

80 and up waggy 44's are driver's drop.

In both cases, the outers are identical to chevy half ton stuff, and I'm pretty sure chevy half ton stuff has the same inner C on the housing as the 3/4 ton stuff, so putting your 8 lug stuff on either of those axles shouldn't be an issue as far as I know... use the inners from the waggy axle and your chevy knuckles and outer stub from the chevy axle.

PS, this is Matt from work... I'm pretty sure you're the right Ian.

A simpler option would be to just cut down the long side of your housing so that you can run a wagoneer-length inner shaft on the long side, and call it a day. D44 C's are pretty easy to remove, just grind through the weld slowly all the way around and use a BFH on it. Compare wagoneer shaft measurements to chevy measurements, cut exactly that off the housing, and mash the C back on there, make the caster lines up the same as the other side, and weld up.

If you don't have a housing, I have a chevy 44 housing you can have. It's got shafts in it, but it's bare from the C's out, and the gears and/or the carrier are broken. Sitting in the back of my dad's dump truck for weight for this winter, at his shop in Leavenworth.

6-lug D44 (chevy) is 67" wide, a 8-lug Chevy D44 is 69" wide. Where do you thing the extra 2" comes from? The housings are the same.

I will admit, its been a long time since I've done the actual measurements, but thats what I've always gone off of and it seems to be right.

Might have to grab the tape again with the camera.

sounds fishy to me. same stub shaft from one to the other, same caliper, same wheel bearings (unless its early). same spindle, same knuckle too. I think your crazy!

Different rotors/hub assemblies?

I have some late 70's K20 rotors in the garage on my 14 bolt, and a whole wagoneer 44 to look at, but there's no comparison since I don't have the K20 wheel hub assemblies.

I am trying to help my Dad out with stuffing a D44 and other 4x4 related components in/under his '36 Chevy truck. I need a final width of about 64" with a passenger side diff. The width can very by an inch either way.

I have been looking on the net and have come up with several D44 width variations for the Wagonner. Everthing from 57.5" up to 62.5". I need a final width of 64" plus or minus 1" with a passenger side diff. If they made a 62.5" D44 with a passenger side diff and "Mark" was right that the 3/4 Chevy stuff will make the 1/2 ton Waggy two inches wider, then this setup would be perfect, but I can only find 69" 1/2 and 3/4 ton chevy D44's.

I may end up having to cut down my 69" chevy D44 as it looks like the Waggy will be too narrow.

I am not real confident in my ability right now to cut a housing down and get it back togehter straight, so any other way of piecing together a D44 with a width of 63" - 65", a passenger side diff and eight lugs?

Hey Matt, you got the right Ian! How's it going?

Find a 6 lug waggy axle then swap Chev 10 bolt or chev dana 44 8 lug hub/rotor and backing plate to the waggy axle then re-use the rest of the waggy parts (lockouts/calipers/stub) it should be a direct bolt on :awesomework:

:edit: get the wide track waggy 44 with a 6 lug pattern 62.5 width

Correct sir, same install that I'm currently running

Scout II housing with 8-lug outers should be about 63" wide, plus or minus some fractions.

IIRC a pre '80 waggy should be just a little wider since they are a little touch wider.

A Scout axle is 60.5" wide with stock outers, Chevy 1/2T outers add 1" total, so 8-lug outers would be about 63.5.

Chop Shop, you are correct, the only different parts between a 1/2T and a 3/4T GM axle is the wheel hubs, rotors and backing plates. Same bearings and spindles, just the mounting surface on the wheel hubs is farther out on the 8-lug units. If I get sometime I'll dig out some parts and a tape measure.

you made me second guesse myself. I just went outside and looked at the 448lug in this crewcab and the d446lug out of a 77 blazer. look the same to me. even the brake rotor looks to be the same offset. same backing plate too. I didnt use a tape, but come on any idiot can see an inch or two:redneck:

Ill measuer it up tomorow. I have 6lug, 8lug, and 8lug HD hubs rotors and complete frontends.

my crewcab does have a 14bff that is two inches wider than a PU rear so it matches the wider front. can you name what the rear is from?:corn:

every chev truck I have ever followed has had a wider front than the rear and I dont recall seeing one being wider than another?:redneck:
