So me and the wife have been looking for something to replace our 60" DLP projection TV..

I have pretty much ruled out plasma because its longevity compared to the LED/LCD tv's.

One thing I have noticed is the LED tv's look like they have a better picture than the LCD tv's (comparing refresh rate and resolution).

So whats better?
 
.. **** if I know, but I do know that Brad (White-Rhyno) just did a bunch of research, comparison ****, price shopping, etc... before he just bought his new TV a month or 2 ago....

He may be able to offer you some advise
 
we bought one a couple months ago and didnt notice anything better about the picture on the LEDs so we went with the LCD samsung.
 
LED TV's are LCD. The LED refers to the back lighting. There probly are some power draw advantages, but it can't be huge, because the non-LED ones use fluorescent lighting, which is pretty efficient in its own right.

Seems like some pretty shady marketing. Calling it LED kind of of implies that the picture is generated with LEDs. Not so. An OLED screan that big would cost huge bucks.
 
I understand what it means (backlighting). Its just hard to tell with some of the coverings on the face of the TV (anti glare)...

I went with LED. The lighting appeared better and that was enough for me.
 
I don't know what the life cycle is supposed to be. But I'm happy with my Plasma. Every-time I see them side by side I think the colors are richer and the pictures is clearer.

4-years and still strong. When it dies (when?) TV's will have taken so many steps forward by then I don't think I'll feel cheated.



As a side not, since I have small children, I also liked the plasma's easy-maintenance glass screen. Not worried about plastic overlays or LCD screens getting scratched or marked up. Sure it could break, but that same impact would probably not be so good for an LCD.

My $.02 I do know that they are a fair amount cheaper now than when I bought mine.

Im with him I have had my walmart 50" plasma for years with not a single problem and the and the life span of the plasma's is supposed to be up there with the led's no more leaky plasma.
 
I went with the 70" Sharp LED. It has been great for the 8 months we have owned it. It is the one with the 4th color of yellow which I didn't care about much, but it does make a difference. I just wanted the size. I was in the PX on post tonight and now they have an 80" damnit.
 
when i was looking at tv's i looked at all 3, plasma, lcd, and led. I ended with getting a LED because the price was in my range but i ruled out a plasma almost immediately. The reason being that it has a glass screen, ( at least all the ones i looked at did, not sure if they all are or not), compared with everything else there the plasmas with the glass screen showed a reflection of all the lights and stuff close by in the store.
 
I love my plazma. Its got a picture that will eat a lcd and led tv.

My plazma has MANY more cycles per second than the lcds and led tvs did.

Watching things like parades and races where some things move and others didnt, the leds and lcds made my eyes hurt. The plazmas let the moving things be seen very clearly like real life, not blury like the led/lcd tvs did.


How about when a few leds burn out? How ya like that dark spot now?

Ever touched the screen on your laptop? It gets all unhappy and distorted cuz the screen is as flimsy as a jeep cherokee.

I enjoy the THICK heavy GLASS screen that my plazma has, my pitbuls cant kill it with wagging tails smacking it. I dont think the led/lcd would last long with tails like that.

Have fun cleaning that ridge/porous surface that lcd/led tv comes with. It takes special cleaner to clean the lcd/led tvs too. I love being able to just WIPE my tv like my ass and its all clean.

Then the glare, the tv salesmen warned me about it. BS I went to the local sports bar and looked at the led,lcd, and plazmas in action around windows. I found the plazma to be great. I also found the lcd/led to be HORRIBLE. It was like trying to use a laptop outside.

Glare cuz the plazma is glass? Thats just a BS marketing ploy by lcd/led supporters. We have been watching GLASS tvs since the creation of TV. Wake up and ignore the marketers. Normal old tvs are glass, have been for decades.

Now onto to quality. The plazma is built with materials OTHER than plastic. It has a nice heavy solid feel. The LED/LCDs are very light and flimsy feeling. They are lit by cheapo leds or flourcents. Both are cheapo, light sources.

I love how they make a lighter (cheaper to ship) and cheaper garbage TV and then spend more on marketing than on quality to convince you that this "cheap new crap" is "state of the art".

Other than the HZ (number of cycles per second) I seen no difference in color or quality.

The cheap plazmas had a high HZ rating while the cheap led/lcd had a very low HZ rating. In order to get a lcd/led that didnt make me feel sick, it had to be a very expensive one that was over a grand for a 40 incher.


I got my awesome plazma at walmart for $440 and its a 42 inch, I think.

Its been kickin ass for years now. And they are about a hundred cheaper now.


LEDS are cheap to produce, NOT state of the art technology. :beer:
 
i went with an LCD over plasma because I have large windows and skylights in the living room causing lots of glare but with the LCD(led) I have no glare issues. But with the LCD I have lag when playing xbox360 and I notice sporting events/car races, super cross and such get blurry sometimes...

I absoluty love my 60" plas. I do get some glare. I dont watch tv when the sun is up so its not much of an issue.

Glass screen is very nice, but heavy. Sure lcd are a lot lighter, but do you plan to move it every week?

You cannot beat plasma picture quality. Plus they are cheaper than comparable lcd's.

I went with the plasma for gaming. Response time is almost 0. Compared to lcds 5-15ms.
 
Honestly, with todays market... just go and look at what will fit your budget and your size requirements.

both TV's can produce a good picture and last a while.

look for the higher refresh rates in either of the models you choose...

I personally prefer the LED-LCD TV's, but that is my preference...

I have had them all and preferred them over the others.

any TV can fail regardless of the type or style.

you will get both sides of a story.... it is like asking which is better... Apple or PC or iPhone to Andriod

you will get lovers and haters of both.

Honestly Crash, in the end all that matters is if YOU are happy with your purchase! If YOU and yours are happy, then who really cares what a bunch if web-wheelers say...

Times whatever on response time. You cannot play Rock Band on LCD, it will drive you nuts :haha:

We saw a 60" Plasma at Wal Mart for $898. but they didn't have one on display and I wanted to see it in action before even considering it.

The best deal for the LCD was $598. for a 50" but it was only a 720p. When you moved up to the LED, the prices jumped alot more, but Michael and I both thought the picture was alot clearer.

Whatever your leaning to buy or choose, put in some time watching them before making your decision.

I didnt notice much about the difference in quality between 720p vs 1080p on ANY of the styles available.

I did notice a huge difference in the HZ/response time/cycles of all the TV sets I watched.

The ones with the lower HZ made my eyes hurt like I was wearing some ones prescription glasses. They also made the moving objects blurry and hard to focus on.

I was able to get the most response/HZ for my buck (by far) with a plazma.

The lcd/leds that were not blury with motion were big money, almost double.

WOW you guys must have a doublewide! I can only squeeze in a 42 incher in my ol shack! :redneck:

You will enjoy the amount of floor space it will free up. I replaced a 50 inch pioneer big screen when I made the jump to a flatscreen TV. It made my living room seem almost big.:redneck:

we got our 50" plasma samsung around four years ago. heard all the bs downsides. none have come true for us. its even been used in gaming the whole time. the boys never shut the tv off. no burn in. i wish it would fail so i could justify a bigger one....may have to damage it myself.

How many years ago was this? LCD's have come a LONG way. The "blur" you're talking about isn't caused by low refresh rate, it's caused by slow LCD response time. Your account reminds me of the very early LCD computer monitors that had MASSIVE blur, to the point of being unusable for games. Modern LCD's don't do that.

Also, the 120hz LCD's are pretty cheap now. They've moved on. The pricing gimmick now is the 3D ****. Even the LED stuff is kind of "last year". I see the plasmas with 600hz refresh, but I'm very skeptical that you can really see any real different past 120hz.

That's the way I'm starting to feel about the cute little 37" LCD in our bedroom :lol:
 
MOST PLASMAS HAVE A very high refresh rate when compared to lcd or led
they also have a wider viewing angle wich depending on your room size may or may not matter if you do gaming u will want the fast refresh rate if your just watching tv or movies i would get led with zone dimming gives much truer blacks and contrast i personaly have a plasma they are very nice but they do draw more power to operate compared to lcds or leds.
 
another thing to consider if you care about it is power consumption. plasma didnt appeal to me for that reason besides all the burn in stuff i had heard from leaving something like the netflix screen or wii menu on by accident for hours on end.

Regardless of what you decide, I really like buying this type of stuff from Costco as they generally DOUBLE the manufacturers' warranty.
 
I have seen plasma's diminish over time and the heat generated from them is not something I want.

I understand the refresh rate on a plasma FAR exceeds any LCD/LED on the market--but what can our eyes actually comprehend?
