Logging at Reiter

We ran up the old Deer Flats road yesterday just for ****s and grins. We found both gates open, so we were able to get all the way up to the tower landing, to find a new tower. I haven't been up there since the gates went in, so that was pretty cool. Anyhow, we ran across this old yarder on the way up. It's built on a Sherman Tank chassis. Apparently that's not all that uncommon, but I'd never seen one, so out came the camera phone :D

You can see down into the hull, but I FAILED to bring a flashlight along, so I couldn't see enough to figure out how the controls are connected or work.

I think one of the crews on "Axmen" used a yarder built on a Sherman, might of been Piehl?

Yep, did a little Googling before I posted the pics, and at least one of the crews has one, but I'll be damned if I can find any decent pics. Loggers don't take pics I guess.

What I would like to know is where and how they truen those empty logging trucks around up there?

I have been up passed where they are logging and I have see the empty logging trucks heading up there. But I never saw anyplace I would try and turn one of theose rigs around.

Do they pick them up with the loader and turn them around?

you would be amazed at some of the places they turn log trucks around at, sometimes the rear duals will be hangin off the edge, also, they may have a turn around half a mile or so down the road, i have seen jobs were the trucks had to back up 1 mile uphill on an icey road, talk about scary...

edit: just a random fact: most log trucks have air lockers in both duals on the rearend

^^This. If there is no room at the top, they turn around at the closest Y. Sometimes a mile or so down a 15 to 20% grade.

I once watched a loaded truck go off the side of the road and into a stump. Dude was out of it setting his binders when the brakes let go. Used the shovel to pull the logs off and put on another truck then picked the whole damn truck up from the headache rack and put him back on the road. Cool ****.

I think the tank yarder was use by the Stump Branch crew in the first season. He was pretty low budge.

And a axel interlock ingages the front to the rear axel and 60 Ton load capable per axel

My old dump truck had logging truck axels Nothing like draggen 70,000 up a 35% grade liften the front tires..

looks like a 071 madill yarder not a bad machine in its day the bremmeyer yarder is a swing yarder both of these models have moved alot of wood.:beer:

my dad used to "wheel" a log loader, crazy storys about almost tippin em over, walkin em out with only 1 track, climbin hills so steep that he had to use the boom to drag it up the hill, he is older now an still "wheels" a log truck, which takes cajones i tell ya, there are some scary moments during the winter time comin off the hill, weighin 105,000 lbs, hell one time i remember him being stuck in a landing in mud that was deeper than his rear drive tires(40")... lots of loggers have good stories about "wheelin" heavy pieces of equipment.:redneck:

Like was stated it's an 071 Madill, ok for a little tower. The tank undercarriage was one of the downfalls of the 071 because the finals were kinda weak with all that weight. The controls are air controled. Tended hook on one, had 4 guylines instead of 3 though. Ours had an 8V71 Detroit for power.

Well all I can say is that Log Truck Drivers have my respect. They take those rigs on roads that make me nervous to drive my Jeep on.

No one needs to say it because i will, I am chicken **** and have no desire to take a rolling tour down the mountain side!

another good story my dad tells is how i wouldnt be here if he had worn his seatbelt...he lost power steerin goin down the highway an instead of goin around a corner, he went out into a cowfield, luckly he didnt have his seatbelt on, and was able to duck down on the floor, the logs came through the upper part of the cab, destroyin the upper part of the cab, all he got was a few cuts an bruises, but in the same breath, i am minus a grandpa because he was ejected from a vehicle when he wasnt wearing his seatbelt

I could be wrong but i thought those guys were a two stroke and they came with a super charger and turbo...

I Googled and am now an Internet Detroit expert :flipoff: I even used Wikipedia :eek2:

They are two stroke and so they need a positive displacement blower to move air in/out of the cylinders. A turbo was added later (still needs the blower) because somebody at Detroit decided a two stroke diesel just wasn't cool enough with just the blower :D

I am tempted to start another thread. Youtube is stuffed with various videos of people running Detroits. There are few things in the world cooler than a two stroke diesel revved up and screaming :D
