Hardline Crawlers - Rock Bouncer Builds, Tech & Off-Road Trail Talk

Help Support Hardline Crawlers:

Busy is an understatement.. Ya I have enough to do I don't even have to think about whats next,lol..

So for the last week I have been spending every spare second on the extension on the back of the barn. Finished the roofing, I pulled 90% of the wiring and redid it along with some lighting and got the dogs sleeping area done up.

I am amazed how fast wood rots when exposed to the elements. I had to replace the end 2x6 and a bunch of the 1x4's for the roof.

I have a few leaks to fix and once this area is done I can get all of the greenhouse/growing stuff organized and stored in that room..

I will say compared to gold bar it is nice to be able to quickly zip into town for supplies.

So I got the unfinished portion roofed. I didn't do enough overlap on the material and ended up needing to seal it. I have been fighting leaks on the old portion so I picked up a bunch more material and will replace it.

First time this area has been cleaned in probably 10 years. The concrete is pretty rough back here but it will be ok for what its going to be used for.

Here is the dog area all cleaned up. This will be part of the kennel for them. I also plywooded one wall and built a new one that will let them get to there outside area. I also made a closeable door so they can be locked inside. But they will have a fenced area outside once I get that done up.

This is in the center of the barn. To the right is the old hay drop for the cows to feed. We won't be storing hay above anymore so I will be re-constructing that whole area here soon.

But I need to get the place cleaned up and all of bobs stuff organized and stored.

I figured I would set myself up with a decent work area and a place for all my tools.

This on the far right of the barn. This leads into the dog area and it was tough since I had literally hundreds of fittings, sprinkler heads and tons of associated items. I promised bob I would separate everything so he knew what he has. This took me the better part of 2 days.

Anybody who knows me--knows I hate heights. It was pouring rain and there was one leak in the roof I needed to fix. I am happy to say I didn't fall :redneck:

You would hate my job :redneck:

Looks good. Are you going to do anything for heat?

So here is the main reason for the back area. All of bobs stuff nicely organized. This is only a small portion of whats going to end up in there. There is a bunch of stuff in both shops and out in the field.

So I have 1/4 of the wiring redone and I am shooting for all of it. Its been added to/patched over the years with lots of circuits with no safety ground. So I got a bunch of new light fixtures and going to start at the entrance door and tackle each room.

You use that thing on the window sill as a hammer?

:redneck:

In this hood--you gotta watch out for coyotes :redneck:

My father in law killed one with a shovel a couple years back behind the barn..

You can hear one of the packs howling every so often at night.

Oh ya the wife informed me the barn was built in 1920. I knew it was old due to the timber used.

I did find a problem with the 3 main supports on the horse side that also support the roof. One was broken and a sketchy repair with the second cracked. Since I will be totally redoing the horse stalls I happen to have some nice 4x6 posts that I will add for support. The part I have not figured out yet is how to have them sit on the concrete floor.

Very cool and congrats!

My in laws live in a 150+ year old barn in Eastern WA and I'd love to find one for myself but not in Eastern WA! :D

If your not gonna use a saddle just roto a hole in the cement and use a piece of rebar.put some 30# felt between the post and cement....

Don't they make some sort of saddle that has a plate on either side of the post that you can roto holes and anchor it in place with a couple anchor bolts like a hoist uses, and the post sits in a pocket keeping it separated from the concrete?

yes.... just get a post base from lowes for a 4xsex and some 1/2"x3" anchor bolts. If I was closer, I'd give you a few. I only have like 45 extras.

My idea was to use one of these. Bore a hole in the floor and cut a 6x6 plate of steel and also buzz a hole the same size. Have base push against the plate and be affixed by the hole. The posts will also be a part of a wall for the hoses so they won't be free standing.

Just an idea I had.

Reminds me of that scene in "Twister"

That would do the trick, just make sure the bottom has some way of seaping any moisture that the would might collect away...out the bottom side of the saddle, not out the bottom plate...

Only problem with using that exact style is I will be using 4x6's and the tilt of the floor--there is like a 2-3 degree slope. But I am thinking something like that since I have the tooling for drilling the floor and threaded anchors.
