What do people normally run? 12v strips wired in? Walmart rope lights? Any suggestions? Ill try to take some pics this afternoon but the handrails have a 2x10 on the top with 5/4 deck boards under it vertical on the front and back.

12 volt strips that come in rolls from ebay(cut to length) You can order them with a remote and 110v power unit. They change colors, strobe, and you can adjust brightness.... Best of all they're cheap...

Have these in my man cave above bar and they give off a good bit ot light. Enough to see and walk around. Not enough to mix drinks but still good light.

If you're going to do it do it right with some outdoor rated ****. This stuff is awesome, I did the whole interior of my living room and then got a RGB color changing remote to go with it. The power supplies are waterproof too.

If it gets confusing give them a holler and just let them know what you're wanting to accomplish. They are really helpful, I did my whole order over the phone.
