• Help Support Hardline Crawlers :

Reforging a pitman arm.

 I assume you didn't quench it?

No quenching I wanted to leave it it soft...figured I'd rather bend it then crack it.

I could of tempered it, to get it a bit stronger but I do that stuff the old school way of judging the steel color.

I make tools out of old car parts all the time, chisels, hammers etc, can all be made from old axle shafts, torsion bars and that kind of stuff. I use that kind of scrap steel for basic tools and one off jobs. Tools that are meant for long term use I try and buy or get scrap 4140-4340 cut offs so I know its good material and not fatigued from years of use.

Good to see the trade is alive and well, it is not everybodies cup of tea and most want to get to the high tech machinery in the machining/blacksmith trades...

that is cool stuff, I really dig metalworking I have done a little bit of heat treating at work in a small kiln and quenching to try to get a specific rockwell hardness, not as easy as think...
