So for the last couple years I abused a RZR 800 S within an inch of its life. There was never a time when the throttle wasn't wide open. It did okay, but you had to drive it hard to make it go anywhere. It was about as built as an 800 could be short of engine mods. Just wasn't enough. I made the call to sell it and start over with an (almost) new XP1000.
I put a build together in my head of the best parts I could think of for this trail 1000. I fortunately live close to one of the best fabrication off-road shops in the southeast, Wide Open Design. They have another company called Wide Open SXS ( Home | Wide Open SXS ), specializing in race-quality parts for RZRs. I called them up and planned the build with them and began gathering parts. Coolest part is this will be the first RZR featured in Petersen's 4 Wheel & Off-Road magazine!
The first step was a cage. Wide Open SXS has a bunch of production cages available, and while they all were top notch products, I was looking for something a little more out of the box. They came up with a new design which is now a production cage. I think it turned out pretty great.
The roof bars are directly over the driver and passenger head for safety, with the stylish bend there is plenty of room for me in a helmet with factory seats (6'2")
Once they cage was finished the next order of business was suspension parts. I'm not a believer in high clearance radius rods personally. I feel like a pre-bent part is just asking for trouble. Again, just my opinion. I'm planning to go with Wide Open SXS's 7075 Aluminum links with 5/8" rod ends. You can see they're twice as beefy as the flimsy stockers, not to mention a way stronger material.
For RZR seats PRP is the only way to go. With all the color customization and different seat styles they really have it going on. PRP GT SEs in the WIDE version. I also went with PRP 3" padded harnesses with the easy adjusters. I had some other harnesses in my old RZR and it was a nightmare to adjust the shoulder straps, these should make life way easier!
Also chose PRP doors. Biggest benefit I saw with these doors is they reuse the factory latch which works so well and doesn't rattle at all. Adjusting them was easy and fit is awesome.
One of the coolest things are the PRP storage bags. They make them for the factory doors and thier own doors. They have a little knee pad built in even. I got the center bag too which is perfect fit between the seats.
One modification I made is the seat bases. I first bolted everything up using the factory seat sliders. It felt like it sat up just a bit higher than stock which fit my legs awesome, but I didn't have the head clearance I wanted (again, 6'2" and fairly round) so I elected to use just the bases without the sliders, I also drilled a hole for the back bolts 1" further back to get the seat as far down and back as possible. This netted me way more room inside than even the factory seats provided. Couldn't be happier!
Picked up the cage from powder, installed the PRP seats, PRP harnesses, PRP doors, storage bags, and put the cage one. I consider this to be "stage 1" of the build with a bunch more to go... Update coming soon!
