So for the last couple years I abused a RZR 800 S within an inch of its life. There was never a time when the throttle wasn't wide open. It did okay, but you had to drive it hard to make it go anywhere. It was about as built as an 800 could be short of engine mods. Just wasn't enough. I made the call to sell it and start over with an (almost) new XP1000.

I put a build together in my head of the best parts I could think of for this trail 1000. I fortunately live close to one of the best fabrication off-road shops in the southeast, Wide Open Design. They have another company called Wide Open SXS ( Home | Wide Open SXS ), specializing in race-quality parts for RZRs. I called them up and planned the build with them and began gathering parts. Coolest part is this will be the first RZR featured in Petersen's 4 Wheel & Off-Road magazine!

The first step was a cage. Wide Open SXS has a bunch of production cages available, and while they all were top notch products, I was looking for something a little more out of the box. They came up with a new design which is now a production cage. I think it turned out pretty great.

The roof bars are directly over the driver and passenger head for safety, with the stylish bend there is plenty of room for me in a helmet with factory seats (6'2")

Once they cage was finished the next order of business was suspension parts. I'm not a believer in high clearance radius rods personally. I feel like a pre-bent part is just asking for trouble. Again, just my opinion. I'm planning to go with Wide Open SXS's 7075 Aluminum links with 5/8" rod ends. You can see they're twice as beefy as the flimsy stockers, not to mention a way stronger material.

For RZR seats PRP is the only way to go. With all the color customization and different seat styles they really have it going on. PRP GT SEs in the WIDE version. I also went with PRP 3" padded harnesses with the easy adjusters. I had some other harnesses in my old RZR and it was a nightmare to adjust the shoulder straps, these should make life way easier!

Also chose PRP doors. Biggest benefit I saw with these doors is they reuse the factory latch which works so well and doesn't rattle at all. Adjusting them was easy and fit is awesome.

One of the coolest things are the PRP storage bags. They make them for the factory doors and thier own doors. They have a little knee pad built in even. I got the center bag too which is perfect fit between the seats.

One modification I made is the seat bases. I first bolted everything up using the factory seat sliders. It felt like it sat up just a bit higher than stock which fit my legs awesome, but I didn't have the head clearance I wanted (again, 6'2" and fairly round) so I elected to use just the bases without the sliders, I also drilled a hole for the back bolts 1" further back to get the seat as far down and back as possible. This netted me way more room inside than even the factory seats provided. Couldn't be happier!

Picked up the cage from powder, installed the PRP seats, PRP harnesses, PRP doors, storage bags, and put the cage one. I consider this to be "stage 1" of the build with a bunch more to go... Update coming soon!

Re: #RZRDigger build - XP1K

Got some more work done on it this weekend. Wired up the new ProVantage 3500 S Warn winch. I don't think Warn makes a winch plate for the 3500 and up for the XP1000 so I got one from SuperATV. I took the drivers side shock off and installed it through there and it was a breeze. The SuperATV winch plate installed easy with provided hardware! The only issue I had was figuring where to mount the solenoid block, ended up putting it in the little box under the driver seat next to the battery.

It comes with a controller to mount directly to the vehicle and also a wired remote. I guess because this winch is usually mounted to a 4 wheeler, I'm used to truck winches with just the remote. It actually worked out cool, I was able to mount the controller to the dash.

Re: #RZRDigger build - XP1K

got the 7075 Aluminum radius rods from Wide Open SXS installed. I'm not worried about bending these!

Also installed SuperATV Rhino shafts. In addition of the peace of mind to have upgraded shafts, the boots seem way tougher than factory boots so tearing off through sticks wouldn't be so bad!

Re: #RZRDigger build - XP1K

More parts yet to be installed. Waiting on a couple other things before sending the wheels to powdercoat.

14" Method 401 beadlock wheels

Gonna mount them on a set of GBC Mongrels. Not a lot of this tire and wheel combo this side of the Mississippi. Looking forward to seeing how they do!

Re: #RZRDigger build - XP1K

Like any good trail RZR, gotta have an obnoxious stereo!

I installed a 900watt RE audio amp under the dash. It's pretty much perfect spot, just had to build a mounting plate so I cut up and broke a piece of aluminum. Easy access with just removing two bolts and the top part of the dash comes off.

Then I installed two 6.5" Kicker KM65 with LEDs. The guys at the shop think the lights are dumb, but I say haters gonna hate! Haha. I could have mounted the speakers on the cage directly behind my head but I was concerned with bumping them while wearing a race helmet, so we elected to mount them on the rear support tubes. Woodlee (owner of Wide Open SXS) came up with these cool little pieces to rotate the pod on the tube clamp.

Re: #RZRDigger build - XP1K

One cool accessory I'm excited about is the SuperATV cooler/toolbox. drain plugs in both sides and built really sturdy. I didn't want to be just another RZR guy with a stereo and a Yeti. Ha!

For me it is perfect because my camera bag fits in there great with the other side holding some drinks!

Install went flawlessly and included all the required hardware. I did have to drill a few holes but it wasn't bad at all.

So I went out and tested it. Yup, works great! Haha

sorry if i missed it somewhere, are you going to upgrade the shocks?

Not at this point, I have the later model shocks with the better shafts so unless I run into problems I'll just be doing a spring kit soon.

This is going to be an awesome rig when done. I really like how your putting money in it but not going complete retard. It will be something to be proud of when it's complete. I've ever really seen you or any videos of you just beating on your rigs. You think now you have a high dollar rig that will be very capable, you will be more apt to "go for it" or hold back because you don't want to f up a beautiful rig?

I think middle of the road, I rolled my old Rzr trying dumb stuff more times than I could count. This one is so much more capable so not sure. I havent wheeled hard yet with it other than a couple random hills. She's already had fenders ripped off and powder coat scuffed up
