So I have been on a sipping whiskey kick for the last year and I'm looking for recommendations.

Over the last year i've worked my way though Crown Black and Maple, Gentlemen Jack and Single Barrel, Four Roses Small Batch and Chattanooga Whiskey.

I cried and bought some Pappy but can't bring myself to drink it.

What does the hardline hivemind recommend for sipping whiskey?
 
If you can find it near you, Leadslingers Whiskey. Limited distribution in only a few states but it is damn good IMO.
 
the wife bought me some wild turkey rare breed a while back it was pretty tasty.. had never had it before.
 
I am a big fan of rye. Try whistlepig if you can find it. Bulleit isn't bad for "cheap" stuff. Also, JD has a master distiller series going that has some pretty good stuff in it but it's super hard to find them. Also, they released a limited run of JD rested rye that is phenomenal.
 
I've been known in the past to have some Jeffersons Rye, neat. I quit drinking and quit working at the store, so I can't fully tell you what most are buying these days. The last trade show I attended, Basil Hayden was being pushed pretty heavily.

I am also a big fan of Scotch too. Dimple Pinch, on the cheap, is pretty tasty.

X2 on this one. Also keep an eye out for the 18 yr, 23 yr, and Barrel proof, versions of Elijah Craig.

We toured the Buffalo trace distillery a while back and according to the tour guide the Weller 12 year is the same mash bill as Pappy for a fraction of the price. It may be aged in a different part of the warehouse but that's about it. I personally prefer the Weller 107.
 
A friend of mine started making Clayton James Tennessee Whiskey. Really good stuff.
 
my preference is Buffalo Trace's Eagle Rare. Its not too $$ but very very drinkable.

and the base Buffalo Trace is my favorite of the 'base' bottles.
 
I like my Fourty Creek. It's a Canadian whiskey, dude ran a wine business for years and sorta reinvented the wheel on how he does his whiskey.

+1 on Forty Creek. I'm not a whiskey drinker by any means, and a friend of mine made me try some of this and I gotta admit it's good...
 
Man I can drink any beer you put in front of me and it has to be absolutely terrible for me to not enjoy it, but I just can't do whiskey. I went through a kick in high school when we all had snorkeled atv's and would camp and go mudding all weekend, where I would bring a pint of JD and Dr. Pepper, shoot and chase, get blew out of my mind drunk, not even make it to the tent, pass out wherever and lay there til morning, and after enough of that, the smell and definitely the taste of any whiskey makes my belly churn. If it's mixed up with something that masks it really good, I can drink it, but that's about it. I just gotta stick with beer.

X2 on forty creek. But be careful, the bottle won't last Long. Better buy two!
 
Go on and open the Pappys..........I opened my 12year old it is FINE. I've got a bottle of each 21 year and 23 year......gonna save them for a special occasion.
 
Elijah Craig, Larceny, and a couple more I can't remember at the moment. Been working my way through the "next to upper shelf" bourbon the last year or so.

How cheap or expensive you liking?
A recent HUGE surprise to me was Old Crow Reserve (86 Proof), hands down will amaze you how good it is. Its $11-13 bottle around here, and I'd put it up against a lot of $40 stuff.

My tastes and "Go to's", these are a bit peppery and Canadian, so compare as a way upscale of Crown.
Pendleton (I like in cokes), I buy this as the handle and continue to refill my small bottle.
Pendleton 1910 (straight), I will literally salivate for the taste of the 1910.


For expensive that you want to taste how the ballers live:
Jefferson Reserve
Willet
Blantons

For smooth step down from above:
Basil Haydens (this is a damn fine beverage)
Woodford Reserve


Stuff I have, and really only have to give to guest that I dont want touching good stuff, but want to feel like they are drinking good stuff.
40 Creek Double Barrel Reserve (meh)
Jack Single Barrel (I swear this is a marketing ploy)
Crown Reserve (see notes for JD single)

There is so much gimmicky **** out there today. So just be weary. Just because it has a cool bottle and sounds like a classy name doesnt mean it is. Or they put Batch #'s on the bottle., doesnt really mean anything anymore.
But for $11-13 for a bottle I highly recommend everyone try the Old Crow Reserve. Hell I dont even have any right now, because it keeps getting drank. Then when you tell people they just drank Old Crow, they dont believe you at all.

Gotta try the distiller series. I promise it isn't a gimmick. Each one tastes totally different. And the rested rye is the best JD product I've ever tasted and we passed around a bottle of Sinatra Select last year at Christmas. Rested rye puts it to shame at 1/3 the cost.
