I'm Robert. I just picked up this 87 Toyota. I'm new to yota's. I used ot own jeeps. So, this ifs stuff is all new to me. Just wanted to introduce myself and show off my new project. Where to start.. Where to start.. So, what do I do first? lift and lock it all? Or is that a waste and do I keep collecting parts to go SA? Thanks for taking your time to look at my rust bucket.:D

That truck will be a great project. I have a 91, all stock minus the ARB in the rear, TSL 31", ans modified rear springs. My truck does awesome. But soon you will find the need for SAS like I have. Great truck though, Yota's kick ass, youll have to keep me updated on your progress.

Hell, I don't know man.. I've heard and read that these 2nd gen IFS suck balls. I don't want to lift and lock it in this state if it's a waste of money. I mean, that is ultimately my plan. Not to waste my money, but to do the SA. So, I can either lift and lock it now. Or, I can collect parts for the SA.

I agree. Im sitting at stock height. Just the ARB, and i removed the overload spring in the rear, put in a custom spacer and made my own spring guides. I wouldnt waste any money in the IFS if it can be avoided. But mine has held up through some pretty rough stuff, so I dont think its that weak. But the SA would hands down be the way to go.

Welcome to the darkside! As far as mods...jump on Pirate4x4 and do some browsing in the yota truck forum and look as some people's builds. Definitely keep an eye out for solid front axle to throw under there, then use a SA kit from someone reputible like Sky, Marlin, or All Pro. Everything else is up to you and how much money you wanna spend. Just do plenty of reading and learn from others mistakes.

Hey, thanks for all responses guys. I appreciate it! What do you all think I should be on the lookout for? Waggy 44 or a stock toyota axle? I found a toyota axle at oly4x4 but they want $650 for it. Is that pretty standard for those axles or is that robbery and I could find something like it for way cheaper?

There is such a strong aftermarket for these trucks, just run a Yota axle. As far as the price, that is way too much! Get on Craigslist and check the local papers...these trucks get parted out all the time. I wouldn't spend more than $250 for an axle.

I just want to get all of this done so I can finally hit the trails again. It's going to take time, I know. It sucks. But, I'm just not made of money like that. Granted, I'm a lot better off than I was a year ago. But, still far away from being moneybags. It just eats at one you know? With a truck just sitting there in the driveway.. At least I can drive the thing every now and then to go get the parts I need. So, that's cool I suppose. Here we go!

Well you can lock your rear with somethin like an Aussie Locker or a Quick loc in a matter of a couple of hours in your driveway! That and some cheap used 31"s should get you up and running for now.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I wheeled my old XJ with 31's for a long time like that. Only, I wasn't locked. That seemed to be the only thing that held me back most of the time. This time though, at least until I get the front axle home (as I think that is the largest/heaviest part that I will need with this SA project) I don't want to risk breaking anything up front. I'll talk that idea over with the lady too. She has a horse and want's to start buying/hauling her own hay. We'll see..

If you shop around and take your time, you can build one of these trucks rather cheap if that is a high priority. Just keep piling it in your garage after you find out what you want and just learn the truck in the meantime.

I put a three inch body lift on mine, and then was able to fit 33's, crashlocked the rear, and have been able to go wheeling while collecting parts for SAS, also bobed the bed which made a huge difference in rear clearance on trails like the issabelle trail, for the most part, anything toyota, ASK CRASH thats the best advice I can give ya

Welcome to the forum robert.

Here is what I would do(and I have done it all over the years. some good and some bad :D ).

Get some 33's, body lift(3") and put a lock right or aussie locker in the rear. That will let you wheel it while you collect parts for the front and you won't be tossing anything when you do the SAS.

as for the front I am very partial to the dana stuff. Get a waggy dana 44 and build it..

ah(sp) yes, now we go deeper into the mess :redneck:

I always suggest 5.29's (and 5.38's on the dana front)

You will find with the 33's and stock gears there will be no 5th gear :D

Now here is where this can turn into the snowball effect. You either re gear now or just put a doubler in it. With that you will need to redo both your drive shafts. So now when you go to SAS your rig you will need to redo the front drive shaft again. Now you can still wheel with the 33's with stock gears. Spidertoys toyota is like this till we do the SAS. At that time it will get the waggy dana 44 and the doubler. But its not the same for everybody....

i agree with crash. do a body lift get some 33's(or sawzall and bigger tires) and lock the rear up.
do the 5.29 gears in the rear and look around you probably could find someone selling an I.F.S front already geared since people are doing sas alot more frequently. i happen to have a geared ifs front sitting in my barn since i did my SAS a couple months ago. does me no good sitting up there

$50 sounds fair for the whole center section it needs the little stub shaft on passenger side replaced but you could do that with the peice from yours.
i got gears and a install kit for $165 so a little over $200 you could have front and rear gears. you could also weld the rear alot of people have had good luck with doing this in toyota's. i ran a welded rear(i bought from someone else on this board) for several months and used the rig for my dd. now that rear is in my buddies truck. cheap,but effective
